No More MafiaWars/Farmville on Facebook?

Quote:

The relationship between Facebook and its biggest gaming partner, Zynga, are at an all time low, we?ve heard from multiple sources. The level of stress, says one source, is ?intense.?

Some of the frustration goes back to last year?s limitations on messaging users. But a much bigger concern now is Facebook?s force feeding of Facebook Credits as the only payment platform that Zynga and others can use. Facebook takes a massive feee ? 30% ? for Credits, and the big publishers like Zynga see it as little more than a protection racket.

To make matters worse, say sources, Facebook is trying to get Zynga to agree to a long term deal where Zynga remains primarily on the Facebook platform. During negotiations Facebook has taken some steps to punish Zynga, such as shutting off notifications for Farmville and other games, and Facebook has threatened, say multiple sources, to simply shut some of Zynga?s games down permanently.

Zynga has already taken steps to distance itself from Facebook in the event of a breakup, such as launching Farmville at Farmville.com. And they have been extra aggressive about trying to get users? email addresses so that they can communicate with them off of Facebook.

On Thursday evening at 5 pm, we?ve confirmed, Zynga CEO Mark Pincus held an all hands meeting to tell employees that they may need to prepare for a break with Facebook. We received this email from one anonymous source, and we?ve confirmed it is largely accurate:

Pincus announced at a 5pm meeting yesterday at Zynga that Zynga was going to launch a social game network called Zynga Live. The Zynga Live initiative was a social gaming network. Facebook and Zynga has been negotiating on Facebook Credits and the talks turned for the worst. In the negotiation process, Facebook shut off Zynga\?s feeds and threatened to shut down games. Zynga in the process threatened to completely leave Facebook and prepared to do so in the previous upcoming weeks.

If Zynga does pull away from Facebook, I?d imagine they?d still let users log in via Facebook?s open graph as well as third party solutions from Twitter and perhaps MySpace. But Zynga would remain in control of their own platform and they certainly wouldn?t be forced to pay a 30% tax to Facebook for Facebook Credits.

Will this happen soon? ?It could be tomorrow, it could be in six months,? says one source.

Zynga declined to comment on this story. We?ve reached out to Facebook.

Update: Facebook?s statement: ?We have conversations with our large developers all the time and we don?t typically comment on specific discussions. But generally, our priority is to ensure a quality experience for Facebook users while fostering an innovative and dynamic environment that offers meaningful opportunities for all developers on Facebook Platform.?

You can block those apps, without blocking the people.. :2 cents:

I lean a little bit towards FaceBook on this. I'm glad they throttled back the messaging for those games, it did take away from the FaceBook experience for alot of people, myself included.

I actually like some of the silly little games they have, but I don't like spam for anything so up in my grill. I also think that without the use of Facebook's platform to launch and solicit for their games / apps- with people making the jump and leaving myspace behind consistantly for at least the last 2 years- whatever fee FB wants to take they should accept.

Facebook's error was not trying to better monitize the traffic to these games years ago. Trying to put the clamp down now the games have enough of a following where they have the chance to exist on their own.

Zynga has a little play room since FB waited so long and they've already been gathering consumer data, but if they pull the plug they will be cutting off their nose to spite their face.

If I were them I would shut up, pay the 30% but trash any exclusivity deals. They need to keep their eyes peeled for who will be the next big thing in the social space and cut a sweetheart deal with them early in the game.

Loki 05-10-2010 02:41 PM

It's said on the official Farmville forum that the Techcrunch article is literally the ONLY article about this, and any other stuff about this cites Techcrunch as the source.

Personally I don't see it happening even if Zynga does indeed open it's own facebook style site, they have WAY to big of a plugin market on Facebook and Myspace.

BUT, if it were to happen it would be ALL of Zynga's games and not just Farmville and Mafiawars (I think they have like 15-20 games total maybe a bit less and maybe a bit more)

I have every MafiaWar/Farmville thing blocked from ever showing up on my front page - it makes me think less of my friends who play it that much.

It makes me want to "unfriend" people who are stuck on that shit.

There are ways to block that stuff. I won't miss MW. There were so many changes made in the last month that I don't even recognize it any more. I am done.

Spunky 05-10-2010 03:48 PM

Nooooo!.I have over 3500 in my Mafia!

halfpint 05-10-2010 03:51 PM

go and play on mafiaoutlaw.com instead :)

seeric 05-10-2010 03:52 PM

zynga had best make calculated decisions.

better to be a rich ho, than a broke pimp.

those games were 100% eyeball driven. (by that i mean no one would know who they are without FB and FB users), which are the eyeballs.

wait till they remove the eyeballs from their games.

proceed with caution Zynga.

haven't been on facebook in 5 months anyhow, so don't really care.

my tolerance level for it ran out.

spazlabz 05-10-2010 04:49 PM

Man I got into that Mafia Wars game and while I was playing it I could not understand the appeal. I mean it is just click, click click and you're done for the day.... I have finally just given it up and yeah, I am tired of seeing it on my facebook page, all I see if those games now

seeandsee 05-10-2010 04:52 PM

I always thought this until I actually played one of the games. They take no time at all. So while every nonplayer thinks that the players sit in front of their computer all day playing Farmville and Mafia Wars, it's actually very far from the truth. You can only play Mafia Wars for about 5-10 minutes at a time, maybe two or three times a day... maybe.

Most of us spend more time on the shitter in a day. I know I do!

marketsmart 05-10-2010 06:02 PM

i said this last year and i will say it again now....

FACEBOOK IS FOR FAGGOTS....... :thumbsup

I never played mafia wars because as an outsider it seems dependant on spamming other people. Am I wrong?

Farmville was a little too repetitive for me. Even after they came out with the tractor / harvester etc..

Jon Oso got me hooked on Restaurant City, that's my main game. I prob put in 10 -15 mins a day or less. Not alot of clicking / repeititive motion. More like a wind up toy, I set it up and it runs itself.

Konkan 05-10-2010 06:12 PM

I`ll miss Mafia wars but fuck that.......

It's the same as any other games. If you spam, you can probably move faster or get additional benefits, but it's not essential. I was playing it for a little while but then got deathly bored with it. And no, I did not do the friend spams as I can't stand those myself.

I've never played so I take your word for it. Maybe I should change it to "it makes me think less of my friends who post MafiaWars and Farmville updates to their page so much."

yeah, because 70% of something is much better than 0% of nothing -- which is what they'll get if they ditch Facebook.

mynameisjim 05-10-2010 10:04 PM

Social Gaming is the future, just like social media was the future a few years ago.

Zynga is a name in that space and one of the originals, I believe they hold all the cards and are right to think so.

I've never played any of those games but if you don't realize that social gaming has a HUGE future, you are out of touch, even more so than me who only has 12 friends on Facebook :)

WiredGuy 05-10-2010 10:18 PM

Facebook needs Zynga a lot more than they might realize. They are also their biggest advertiser and the reason FB is now profitable. I understand why FB wants them to use their credit system only, but they should simply work a revenue sharing deal. Zynga will lose a huge following from the breakup and Facebook will lose a ton of revenue. They should just work a deal and try to salvage this relationship.

No skin off facebook's nose. Zynga needs FB more than the other way around--farmville addicts or no farmville addicts.

If there's anything I've seen in business it's that people far too often will throw away 70% of something to go for 100% of what turns out to be nothing.

exactly. which is what prompted my "better to be a rich ho than a broke pimp" comment. they are making shit tons more cash now than if they leave. as much as facebook "needs" them, zynga is fully dependent upon facebook.

well said. :thumbsup

For the first time in a year or so yesterday I logged into the face book account I made long ago. I had over 20 friend requests from distant unknown relatives, and some privacy settings popup that would not go away and was entirely vague. Can someone explain why they are trying to force me to use what they call "old settings" versus some radio button that doesnt tell me what it does? How do I know what in the fuck my "old settings" even are or were if it wont let me surf without the popup in my face?

Yesterday I just hit my browser back button until I could get my mouse on the Logout link and click it. MF's really must like to piss people off..
