i wonder if Einstein thought everyone else was an idiot?

i've noticed here at gfy it's not uncommon for people to say "90%+ of the population are idiots" i.e. pretty much everyone but me is an idiot if they don't think like i do or agree with what i think.

so it got me wondering if an Einstein would/did think that way about everyone else.

i don't believe he did though, from the documentaries and such, he seemed to have an understanding, concern, respect and empathy for those around him.

:)

Maybe you can think about people like chess pieces. I'll be a pawn today.

I'm sure that, like most geniuses, he had very limited patience for stupidity.

but that's the thing though, right. i mean, pretty much everyone is stupid in comparison. it would be easy for him to have the perspective that everyone else is an idiot and be right to a large degree.

so i would imagine an einstein would go apeshit if he really got caught up in all that. but he didn't. or didn't appear to anway.

PR_Glen 05-10-2010 09:30 AM

Anyone can dismiss someone as being stupid and useless, but it takes someone with a great mind to understand others from all walks of life.

CarlosTheGaucho 05-10-2010 09:31 AM

Not really, he was interested and active in far too many areas to even care about this.

Plus there were many brains in his environment to challenge him.

Eventually, you don't have to be a genius to realize that to care about a hobby such widespread such as idiocy is utterly and completely unproductive.

dyna mo 05-10-2010 09:34 AM

it would make a pretty funny comedy sketch to have Einstein trying to explain the theory of relativity for the 1st time and freak out cause the idiots just don't get it!

lolololololololol

Riffhard 05-10-2010 09:46 AM

I just watched a movie on Comedy Central yesterday and somebody asked the exact same question... weeeiiiirdd...

You wouldn't have to go as far as Theory of Relativity

Btw. I wonder how many people know Einstein actually didn't receive his Nobel Prize for the Theory of Relativity

Luke Wilson was in it and he somehow traveled to the future where everybody was really dumb and they tried to water crops with Gatorade or something like that. I think it was called Idiocracy.

Lol, Nah ! Was joking because Adler is famous for his 'inferiority complex' which speaks to the problem of self-esteem and it's negative effects... for example putting someone down by calling them an "idiot"

(subconscious feeling that one is inferior to others in some way)

well, there you have it.

i'm sure einstein could appreciate the fact that if you stuck 10 dumb people in a room , the smartest one isn't "smart" he just isn't as dumb as all the rest.

well in simple terms , i bet einstein thought he was pretty dumb too, just maybe not as dumb as others. I'm sure he could value the fact he wasn't as dumb as many people , but i bet he was smart enough to realise he wasn't so smart after all :)

is a bear who can ride a bike smart ? or is he just smarter than your average bear :)

I ask myself that question all the time. :)

On a side note:
Stupid and idiot are two very different things at least in my mind. Stupid is someone that is not very intelligent. Being an idiot really has more to do with their behavior or their inability to use knowledge correctly.

this makes sense as well, although the term *idiot* is bandied around here often, usually levied at someone who disagrees, has an opposing opinion or the group someone deems is responsible for all things said person disagrees with that they think is wrong with the world.

i can't count how many times i've read *90%+ of the population should kill themselves* or something to that effect here at the gfy. the irony is, i'd wager, everyone else would prolly put that person in their 90%+ of the pop should kill themselves group.

in other words- everyone is an idiot except the person making the everyone is an idiot comment. :upsidedow

Actually, Einstein thought himself an idiot, for not being able to work out his Unified Field Theory.

He was wrong, of course. Albert was quite intelligent and had his moments. I mean, everything's relative.

Yes, but what if the 10 dumb people that were put in the room are not actually dumb, but very smart and were just acting dumb to fool the one(s) in charge? I guess in the end it would prove that the person/people who chose the 10 "dumb" ones is/are actually the dumbest one(s). ;)

nobody is in charge , i was just saying if theres 10 dumb people , the smartest of the ten isn't nec smart , he is just smarter than the rest.

To the outside observer , i suppose you would have to be smarter than the ten people beforehand or you may very well pick 10 smart people who act dumb. ( if you were smarter you would know they are fooling you :) )
