disabled webmasters?

I'm wondering if there are any other disabled webmasters on this board, or if anyone knows of any.

My reason? I've been working on my amateur site since Aug. of this year, hoping to launch in January, and in the intervening time, I've been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Really fucking agressive RA, too -- it seems to be getting worse day by day, and there are times now when I can't get out of bed without help, much less shoot content or work on the site.

I'm worried that as I get sicker, I'm not going to be able to handle the site, the modelling, the camshows...that I'm going to be progressively more disabled and disfigured (knotted joints, etc) and that I'm just not going to be able to physically handle the strain.

I know that there are sites that cater to the amputee/wheelchair/disability niche, and I've looked at some of those, but what I'm more interested in is webmasters who are doing the grueling job of putting together and maintaining an adult site while dealing with their own problems of mobility, fatigue, and chronic pain. There have to be some out there, and it would sort of be positive reinforcment for me -- if they can do, I damn well can.

And mostly...I'm very depressed about this whole shitty situation. I started this project hoping to bring in some extra money, and now I KNOW we're going to need extra money, with this crap going on...but I'm in a catch-22...I have a business plan to bring in extra cash that I'll need for my treatment, etc...but my illness might keep me from bringing that business plan to the level it needs to be at to make money.

This shit sucks. And I needed to vent a little. Anyway, if you know of a webmaster with a disability, I'd love to hear from them/get in touch with them. Thanks. :)

There are plenty of webmasters with disabilities, i've got ADD really bad & it fucks me up when i'm trying to do more than 2 things at once....but what shows your character is what you get done with your disability :thumbsup

Right now I'm only on an anti-inflammatory, so I'm not getting the good drugs. :( I'm gonna get my doctor to hook me up, though. Gimme the vicodin, baybee!

And props to you for getting out there and not letting ADD stop you. I know how hard that is, my husband has ADD...he was on meds for a while, but e felt like it made him a zombie. And I'd rather have him be himself and not all zoned out, even if that means he drives me up the fucking wall sometimes. :)

I was diagnosed with an avm malformation of the spinal cord at
t-12 and was paralyzed in 1986. I completly got out of my wheelchair but had a bad surgery in 1995 that put my permanently on crutches. In 1996 I started doing porn sites as well as being a courier on crutches. I know it may get depressing but keep positive and stay healthly. I would suggest going to physical therapy and they can usually show you what to do to minimize pain etc. I have a completly different condition than you but look at it this way you have the best job for being disabled. You can work your own hours etc and don't have to report to some asshole boss. Maybe hire a partner to help you out or someone who can just take your place when your not feeling well. If you need anything please let me know and good luck to you.

I am sorry to hear that you have Rheumatoid Arthritis. I live with chronic pain and can relate although I know that rheumatoid is the most painful arthiritis to have.

:(

I have degenerative arthritis in my jaw joints, tmj disorder, neck injury , and muscle damage from both injuries, fibromyalgia and I suspect some back disorders since they showed upon my daughter and I have had problems since my earlier 20's..

Hungryman is a bit of a retard I don't know if he's actually disabled

Tam 12-29-2002 05:22 PM

I have Degenerative Disk Disease, 3 Herniated disks...... nerve damage in my upper and lower back that controls my right side..... so walking is pure hell sometimes. I also have a mitral valve prolapse. I had 5 Doctors tell me I'd never work again and would eventually require surgery to even be able to walk...... they wanna do surgery on me now but only give me a 50/50 of it fixing me or putting me in a chair... while I can walk, those odds aren't satisfactory.

BUT I work thru it..... I have an awesome support system here at home and I work to keep my mind off of shit, otherwise I'd be one depressed bitch...... you find what takes your mind away from it and work your way thru it is all you can do. Don't THHINK about it or the severity of it or you will drive yourself mad......

I don't take any pain pills or anything for mine. I just deal with it when it flares up and move thru it....... you can too.... it ain't that bad if you keep your mind somewhere else. ;)

Rochard 12-29-2002 07:55 PM

Make sure you have a good business partner or a second in command that can step in and take over if you can't handle it....

theking 12-29-2002 08:01 PM

I have a seriously messed up back. I have lived with pain since 1991 when I was injured during the first gulf war. I will eventually end up in a wheel chair. Fortunately I am retired and do not have to rely upon earning an income or worry about incurring large medical bills as I use the VA for any major medical expense and have insurance that covers 80% of minor expenses thus saving me from having to continously travel to the nearest VA medical facility. I sympathize with you.

Living with cronic pain and lack of mobility has been a daily thing for me for 20 yrs.
Car accident, compressure fractured my neck at 4thcervical vertabre(sp) and damaged 5c &6c, compressure fractured 10T & 11T. The disks came out fine but the bones, nerves, and other soft tissue didn't.
All basiclly healed now, but major fucked for life.
I stopped taking all those pain/anti-inflammatory meds, they made me into a walking/crawling zombie
I started smoking pot every day all day 10 yrs ago and have been able to cope and work online.
The pot does helps you get a handle on the pain, and even on the real painful days it allows you to function.
Of course the buzz ain't too bad either.

Some days working can be real hard, but you just have to pace your self. And never give up.
My :2 cents:

I am in a wheelchair, severe pain, all that jazz. Spine is bending a great deal from constant sitting.

To much to list really.

Kiko_Wu 12-29-2002 10:20 PM

Well, I'm not really qualified to speak on this but an ex-girlfriend of mine had rheumatoid arthritis. Some days were a lot worse than others. My suggestion would be to automate as much of the site as you can and stockpile as much content as possible- whenever you are up for it. If you fall into the habit of last minute updates like a lot of amateurs the first time you have a really bad week you won't be able to update and you'll start having cancellations. Try to have updates ready two months or more in advance, automated if possible. That way you can coast a bit if the going gets rough. You also might want to have a script to rotate the galleries every week- keep only 80% of your content or so active at a time. That way if things do get really bad and you can't shoot the site will still have have a "live" appearance that should get a second month out of the fresh sign-ups.

Regular cam shows are really hard on a girl even if don't have RA, they have been gospel in the Amateur niche but remember they are generally non-recurring income- once you have spent the time on a show it has generated all the income it ever will. If you spend the same time shooting content it will continue to add value to your site indefinitely. Cam shows are a good tool but they are replaceable with other kinds of content if your health can't take it.

I'm not disabled myself but I act as the carer for my disabled husband. He isn't in a wheelchair at the moment but he was for a year after his accident (he was on a motorcyle when he was hit by a drunk driver...one reason I HATE drunk driving) and he will most likely end up back in one at some point.

I do know what you mean about the pressure of really needing the money. I got into this biz because I need a way of working for home so I can take care of him when he needs me. When it looks like someone has put a brick wall in front of you to stop that it is heart breaking.

He helps me when he can because afterall he is phycically disabled - not mentally. However, he has so much pain and has a hard time dealing with the fact that his mobility is becomming reduced that I don't want to put too much pressure on him. He used to be a top class journalist but that had to end when his accident happened.

He runs an online newspaper now..a labour of love really. It has a good based of loyal readers that have been following it for 7+ years now but the advertising options it pretty limited. It is a local paper and around here people have barely heard of the internet let alone trust it enough to spend money on advertising.

If you do find any sort of group for disabled webmasters I would be thrilled for us to get involved. It would be good for the both of us.

Wow -- thanks for all the info, Kiko! I've been looking into setting up some kind of MySQL database for my site, so that the updates can be automated, and I had decided to do the stockpiling content thing, too. I'm kind of pissed about that right now, though -- due to Christmas holidays, my daughter's been out of school and will be out until the 5th, so there's been no shooting of any kind since her vacation started.

I'm hoping to get my doctor to give me some cortisone shots in the most painful joints (left shoulder and left knee) and that should give me some pain-free days coming up where I can shoot as much content as possible. I don't really want to get started on prednisone (my gf takes it, and she has some horror stories about the side effects :( ) but if that's what it takes, I guess I'll have to do it.

I have seriously been considering structuring my site without camshows, and relying more on doing very member-driven/request-driven content. Basically, I'll be pitching toward the fetish niche of the greater BBW niche, and fulfilling as many requests as I can for more specialized content. Someone on the board posted about sneaker fetish a few days ago, and I've been thinking about incorporating that into my spectrum of fetishes -- t'would certainly be easier on me than posing in high heels all the time. :1orglaugh I just don't see how I'm going to be able to be smiling and sexy and responsive during camshows when all I want to do is curl up with a heating pad and veg. And I really don't want to wear myself out for camshows that might not be up to members' expectations, anyway.

And everyone's suggestions about finding an assistant are good -- the trouble is I haven't the faintest idea where to look around here. And for the time being, I couldn't pay anyone, anyway. The automation/stockpile of content seems to be my best bet at the moment. My husband also wants to learn enough HTML to be able to build galleries of the shoots after I've edited the images, so that would help a lot, too.

As for automating my site, anyone have any suggestions on the best ways/handy scripts/software packages for that? I have MySQL access on my site, so I could set it up that way. (I have a bulletin board script running on there now, in fact.)

Thanks for all the support, y'all. I appreciate it. :thumbsup

Edited to say that I am going to get around to answering the other posts in this thread, and that I very much appreciate the feedback, but I'm fading fast and I'm gonna head for bed. Night, all. :glugglug
