Nobody is talking about the 1000s of Japanese protesters for closing the US air base?
Is this even in the US media?
Big news in Asia. Some reports are saying over 100,000 Japanese turned out for it. :helpme |
Protesting for or against?
As long as we don't move any more bases to Guam. Would be terrible to see that island capsize. |

When your country wages a world war that causes the deaths of millions upon millions I think it's safe to say that you pretty much give up your right to bitch about the US keeping a military presence on your soil. But whatever -*shrugs*- it has been over 60 years since then, maybe it's time to close up shop and leave them to their country?
As long as they don't pull any more shenanigans like that again it's no skin off my ass if there's a base there or not. But wasn't there talk of the US closing another of their bases, I think it was a few years ago, the one in Puerto Rico? I remember the people there were protesting it, that they wanted the base to STAY, because closing it would negatively impact the local economy or something. I may have the details wrong but I do recall watching news items about it. |
We need to bring our troops home from around the world. There is no need for us to be there anymore.
|
correct me if im wrong, but aren't WE the japanese military?
isn;t closing our base basically closing theirs? |

Can you imagine if China said they were going to built a base in Mexico or in the Dominican Republic? We would go to war with them. |
If they closed down half of the bases we have in other countries everybody would have free healthcare.

We have a base there because of the terms with our peace treaty with Japan. Also in that same treaty is a section that says if Japan is attacked by another country, the USA will declare war on the attacking country and protect Japan.
And they want us to leave. Well too fucking bad. |

Wasn't Pattaya an ex US naval base?

Agreed that it isn't getting any UK media play. Though, we are in the middle of an election so most things are getting much less coverage than normal unless they are stopping people flying.

Looks like the fall of the LDP might pave the way for some real changes to Japan-US military relations... |

The truth is after sixty years, civilian development has crept up to the military bases, and now the civilians don't want airplanes flying over their houses. At the same time, these same civilians fail to understand that all of the commercial development in the area is directly related to the military base. This is a common problem here in the United States with both military and public airports. But I have the perfect solution for our problem with Japan. Return Iwo Jima to the United States, and m make it the only US military base in the area. Problem solved. |

and 13 other Japanese words :) |
Is this in Okinawa or Japan?
In Okinawa we built all the highways in Okinawa and the funny thing is, their economy would take a massive turn for the worst if we shut down the bases. They sustain themselves by the amount of cash the US troops spend over there... This is nothing new, when I was there 12 years ago they used to protest all the time as well... |
Konichiwa boyach...

The US has quite a presence in Japan. Over 30,000 troops. In Okinawa U.S. military installations occupy about 10% of the total land usage. Plus, the Japanese govt has to pay an annual fee as "host nation support" to the US. Looking at it from their point of view, you kind of understand why they want the troops either out totally or reduced significantly.
