The Sky is falling

So I was watching Good Morning America this morning.
So not from Fox
They said that Americans for the first time in a long time prefer American Cars?
They also said the GOP was working with the Dems on the financial bill to regulate wall street?

OK, I figure the shift in cars is due to the Toyota problems and the Financial bill is getting bipartisan support because of the news about Goldman Sachs, but hey, I'll take the good news anywhere I can get it these days.

Toyota had an awesome reputation and now they've really fucked that up. Some people like Nissan or Honda.

US made cars are pretty bad

Cyandin 04-21-2010 10:49 AM

I agree that it's too bad that Toyota (I myself being a big fan) fucked things up lately with all these recalls.

That said, I think that itself is the reason for the appearance of preference for American cars. It's too bad that we can't take more pride in our cars and want to buy them more, but they're of such poor quality, that we can't help but direct our dollars elsewhere.

Also, I find it amusing that a lot of Americans with that sort of redneck "I only buy American" attitude either fail to see, or simply ignore the fact that many "import" brands (like Toyota) actually produce more American jobs in the production of some vehicle models than the "domestic" manufacturers do!

Determining what vehicle to buy based on the "support US jobs" premise goes far beyong looking at the emblem on the hood.

honda on the spree

Bryan G 04-21-2010 01:06 PM

Honda FTW,

TheDoc 04-21-2010 01:09 PM

Nissian.... I won't buy American trash, cheap, ugly, crap cars again. Unless it's vintage.

If they screwed up, I would still buy a Nassian... any true Toyota lovers, will always buy Toyota. Just the idiot truck buyers in the south that need an excuse to buy a new truck, even if they never owned a toyota.

L-Pink 04-21-2010 01:23 PM

What really is an AMERICAN car? A chevy made in Canada/Mexico? A Toyota made in Kentucky? A Kia made is Georgia? Where were the majority of parts made ... Where was it assembled?

Fuck if I know .....

.

GrouchyAdmin 04-21-2010 01:24 PM

I like Swedish cars, but I'm an asshole.

KILL_FRENZY 04-21-2010 01:25 PM

Good, they sabotaged Toyota and now Honda's on a spree :1orglaugh

kane 04-21-2010 01:33 PM

Toyota deserves anything it gets. These guys knew the cars were dangerous and had potential problems but they cut a deal in order to sell them anyway. What is more fucked up is that Toyota used lobbyists to help then get some rule changes that cut the costs of product recalls for them by around 100 million.

So they knew they had a potentially dangerous product, they used lobbyists to help them save money on doing any recalls and then they ignored the problem until people started getting hurt and now they are suddenly sorry and want us to trust them again.

Fuck em.

I have never owned a Toyota and now never will. I am putting them on the list with Ford as a car I will never buy because of their shady business practices. . . of course if I look close enough I'm sure every car maker would end up on my list and I would be driving a horse drawn buggy :)

Good question.

My car was sold as a British car (well badged as a Vauxhall - GMs UK brand).

But building it started off at Adam Opel in Antwerp, Belgium.

Then it went to OPC in Rüsselsheim, Germany for finishing.

I expect a lot of the parts will have come from Asia.

And the engine came all the way from Brazil. :1orglaugh

I had a dodge truck that was assembled in Mexico, why are we sending them the work and they are sending us the workers?

Thank NAFTA

BradM 04-21-2010 02:34 PM

Do they at least build Navy vessels in the US still or are those made in Manila?

PenisFace 04-21-2010 02:35 PM

Amen to that!

Rochard 04-21-2010 04:27 PM

This is less about the truth and more about perception. Everyone "thinks" Toyota is the best quality, and while it's standards might be high the American companies have gotten just as good. It took their recent problems to shatter the myth.

You don't won't them working together to pass a financial reform plan.. Didn't you get enough from the sham of a health care bill? They are playing the old tricks. Back before the passed the Federal Reserve Act in 1913 the banks ran a campaign against it so the people thought it was a good thing if the bankers don't like it. Not knowing the bankers wrote the bill themselves. Same thing happened with the Health Care bill and the same thing is happening with the Financial bill. The Democrats and Republican fighting over it is all for show as usual. What we will get out of the financial bill is more or less a tax on every thing you do. Sure they say the financial institutions are paying for but who gets the bill in the end? You and I do.. And it will most likely be passed to us in transaction costs..

I guess I am not holding my breath and will believe it when I see it. Just last week all 41 senate republicans signed a letter agreeing to filibuster the wall street reforms. Now this week they are in the mood to work together. I guess we will see just how much compromise each side wants to make.

aniloscash 04-21-2010 06:34 PM

I had a tacoma pickup and it was solid but it was new never had a problem with if for the few years I had it. But normally I have driven wranglers. And out of the 3 I have had I have only had it break 2x. So for me and my experience its hard to say which is better. Mazda 3 had a warning light go on when I first got it. They put a new one in. But it never broke down. I guess I'm lucky.

The republicans working with the democrats? Wait until the supreme court nomination thing gets going. I think they will back to blood wars

SomeCreep 04-21-2010 07:22 PM

People watch Fox News? I watch it whenever I want to laugh. Their attacks on everything Obama and everything Democrat is so ridiculous, it's comical.
