I think people are so used to the religious heads of the right (pat robertson, jerry fawell) saying such things and meaning it (ie 911, katrina) that they just don't take the time to realize rush is joking around.

It is too easy for these talking heads to claim, when needed, that they were joking.. People watching Stewart know that he is in for the laugh, to find the absurd side of things in general. He is not seen or perceived as a " influential opinion leader" ... Rush Limbaugh is, and most people listening to him takes what he says for a thruth, good as cash ...
Maybe he should say before his coments : this one is a joke, it is not true ....

Jerry Falwell said that hurricane katrina was because of the homosexuals and promiscuity in our country. He was not joking, he was a religious leader. He also spewed the same shit after 9/11, saying it had to do with God allowing it to happen because of lesbians, gays and abortionists. He quickly apologized and said it was only terrorists who were responsible. He went on later to state famously that we should "blow them all away in the name of the Lord"

There really is no difference, and that should be the take-away lesson from this. Religion can be a terrible, violent, dangerous thing that brings together people who are completely intolerant of others and who are prepped and eager to believe (without question), anything a leader tells them.
