2012 came early in Europe.......

ok so what gives?

Northern Europe is completely shut down...no airtraffic for second day now.
Rumor is that people are hiring taxicabs for trips around Europe like London to Amsterdam..
No train tickets available, all sold out..
All rental cars sold out.

Can we get some verifications from people on the ground over there?

oh yeah, 2012?
4 large quakes within a few months
vulcano eruption
whats next?
just for the record, i do not believe in those doomsday prophets.

It's pretty much just like the US when Chicago shuts down, except with a decent train network, smaller distances, and better food ;)

I'm watching Europe Air traffic map...

This is amazing. No airplanes in the sky.

A group of 4 guys from Norway hired a cab to take them to Switzerland for their skiing vacation. $2000 or some shit in cab fees.

I heard an expert say that the number of big earthquakes is about the same as normal, the difference at the moment is that the earthquakes are near to the surface and in populated areas.

It seems at the moment that every time you switch on the news another train or plane has crashed or another city is in rubble.

Actually, you hit the nail on the head w/ the last sentence - the rate of incidents remains the same, but global media coverage and 'instant' news sources like twitter, etc, give each event a lot more attention than previously..

its freaky more planes grounded than on 911

Why wouldn't you just rent a car?

Isn't there a volcano in Iceland erupting or something, it's affecting air traffic to/from Europe?

Still not much happening in the UK at all. Nobody is going anywhere.

Our cars had a small layer of "ash" on them yesterday. Pretty crazy tbh...

ottopottomouse 04-17-2010 03:39 AM

My car looks a bit dusty.

Clear blue sky today.

Not tried hiring a car so no idea if they are in short supply.

Only thing I have actually noticed is all the information signs on the motorways yesterday were saying NO FLIGHTS - AIRPORTS CLOSED.

Tasty1 04-17-2010 05:32 AM

The rentalcars companies are asking 600 euro+ for a car cause the rental companies have to get the cars back from 1000+km on a truck (and make extra money). Extra trains are running now from Amsterdam.

John Cleese went with a cab from Oslo to Brussels for 3800 euro :) He had 3 drivers that changed seats during the trip.

I you are in Amsterdam, i can find people that will drive you for that money.

You have a radar here that shows if it's raining, www.buienradar.nl Though there where no clouds yesterday on that rain radar is saw clouds when i looked up. The volcanao ash can't be detected on the rainradar, so it must have been the volcano ash.

Phoenix 04-17-2010 06:27 AM

time to just sit in a nice cafe with a good view for a few days, read a couple books

enjoy life...better to be sitting alive then screaming murder as your plane is going down in the icy Atlantic because no one knew about the dust particles screwing up planes

John-ACWM 04-17-2010 07:51 AM

Just the nature, no prophecies.
