TYPE O NEGATIVE frontman Peter Steele is rumored to have died of heart failure earlier today (Wednesday, April 14).

Mistress Juliya of Fuse TV wrote on her Twitter page earlier tonight that she spoke to TYPE O NEGATIVE guitarist Kenny Hickey just before midnight New York time, and that Kenny confirmed that the rumors were true.

Revolver magazine's editor-in-chief Brandon Geist also posted on Twitter that he has heard reports of Steele's passing. "Hoping [the rumors] are not true, but the source is good," he wrote.

It should be noted that there ***has been no official statement*** released by TYPE O NEGATIVE or the band's management to corroborate these reports.

Back in 2005, many people were shocked when they logged on to the TYPE O NEGATIVE web site and saw a gravestone with the words "[P]eter Steele - 1962 - 2005 .... Free At Last" carved on it. According to Epinions.com, there were rumors at the time that Steele was sick (with anything from cancer to AIDS), was on his deathbed, attempted suicide ... and the list goes on. Needless to say, it turned out that Steele was very much alive and the gravestone was merely a joke, albeit one the wasn't viewed as being in particularly good taste.

Steele was born Petrus T. Ratajczyk on January 4, 1962 in Brooklyn, New York. He stood 6' 7" (201 cm) tall, and had a low, bass-heavy voice, which was one of the most recognizable features in TYPE O NEGATIVE's music.

Before forming TYPE O NEGATIVE, Steele played for the metal group FALLOUT and the thrash band CARNIVORE.


Their website does say:

I texted my ex who's from Brooklyn where Type O is from, she's close friends with them.
(sidenote: This is one model AND attorney whos hard to forget)

She said Kenny from the band called her right after it happened. She and her husband (who co-owns Shecter guitars) are very close to Type O as I said, so I'd say my source is fairly credible.

Heavy Rocker Steele Feared For His Life In Prison

Heavy rocker PETER STEELE had to use his size to avoid violence in jail because fellow inmates made it clear they didn't approve of his long black hair and fangs. The TYPE O NEGATIVE frontman served a prison term in 2005 after beating up a love rival and threatening to kill him, and admits he feared for his life behind bars. He tells rock magazine Revolver, "To be white in jail and to have long black hair and fangs is not an advantage. "I was in maximum security, and there were some pretty scary people in there who are never gonna get out, so they had nothing to lose by f**king with me. "Fortunately, I'm six-foot eight (inches) and I weigh 260 pounds, so I'm not exactly a target." Steele's 2005 confinement didn't stop with his spell in jail. Upon his release, family members staged an intervention and insisted he check into a mental institution. He adds, "I was suffering from drug-induced psychosis, and I was doing some pretty insane things, like putting cameras in light switches and in shower heads. "All the paranoia was because of all the cocaine I was doing."

Damn thats young, i think i still have their soundtracked version of the silent film Nosferatu around somewhere. Really good stuff.

Carnivore's Retaliation is (in my opinion) one of the 5 best metal albums of history - it should be right there with "Reign In Blood", "Master of Puppets" and Black Sabbath V4. I'm not sure why it never got the recognition it deserved, but it is as brutal as hell.

Agree with you totally xxxjay, I bought that album when it came out and listened to it tons, great band super heavy and stood out as one of the greats

I spent the whole day yesterday listening to Carnivore and Type-O. That is seriously the most bummed I've ever been over the death of a musician.

I couldn't believe it when I first heard about this but after checking several reputable sources, I found out very quickly that is was indeed very true. :(

The dude was only 48 years old too. I have always liked Type O Negative and my thoughts go out the band and to Peters family.

Type O Negative has long been one of my favorite bands. My username on here was inspired by a Type O Negative concert shirt from around '96 that said "The Profits of Doom" on the back, long before they titled a song "Profit of Doom". I've hung out with Peter Steele a handful of times and have seen them live in the neighborhood of 60-70 times with no exaggeration. This absolutely fucking sucks...

RIP Peter.. Saw them do a show in Boston about a dozen years back or so... one of the best gig's I've been to
