Dr Who greatest sci-fi character of all time?

So says the poll: http://uk.news.yahoo.com/021227/4/dhgfy.html

Buffy, LOTR, Star Wars characters and others all beaten by the good doctor...who do you think should be there?

I grew up in Scotland in the '60s and back then you had to pay for the TV to be on - you had to put the money in a box on back of the tv and it would stay on for a certain amount of time. We didn't have a lot of money so the tv wasn't on a lot but it was always on for Dr. Who.

Those Dalecks used to give me nightmares.

Dr. Who can't carry James Tiberius Kirk's jockstrap :321GFY

I would also put Kai from 'Lexx' up at the top too

Probono 12-27-2002 07:26 PM

Dr Who is the greatest. William Shatner could have been a Dalek.

Dr. Who never had enough science in it to qualify as sci-fi in the first place. It's fantasy, not sci-fi.

archer 12-27-2002 10:37 PM

i always thought that dr. who was very much of a british thing.... given that it's a british poll, i think that would still be the case

Not exactly true, there are the space and time travel elements plus the robot. It's fuzzy science to be sure instead of hard factual science but that's what makes Doctor Who fun. It's like the old Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon serials. Lord of the Rings is pure fantasty & Buffy is mostly horror so calling the poll for "science fiction characters" is rather misleading. When I think of science fiction characters, I think of the following: Doctor Who, Kirk, Spock, Will Robinson, Buck Rogers, etc.

sonomasnap 12-27-2002 11:03 PM

Does Johnny Quest count as Sci-Fi? Or how about Buckeroo Banzai?

Sarah_Jayne 12-27-2002 11:31 PM

I'm a Red Dwarf fan but I am never sure if I should classify the show/books as sci fi or just a spoof of sci fi.

Mark 12-27-2002 11:46 PM

Red Dwarf!! :thumbsup

Can't wait for the movie!

dig420 12-28-2002 02:09 AM

I'll say this once more, then I'm gonna have to take action:

Jim Kirk is the greatest sci-fi character ever. Spock is second. To even insinuate anything less is un-american.

Pornwolf 12-28-2002 04:16 AM

I will take a Dr. Who box set over a Star Trek Box set anyday.

The good Dr. Rocks!!!!! http://www.krysstal.com/images/drwho4_4doc.jpg
