...I finished up the deposit but something seemed odd about the machine. At this point I started pushing and pulling on it a little bit and the top part slides open. Then I pulled on the lower part and it opened up too.

What would you have done?

sounds like a fake machine front...they probably recorded your numbers and pass codes

although i bet your deposit made it inside
if it really fell apart like that...use the phone in there to call the bank and let them know

When I read "Bank of America" I knew this would not be good.

that was just one the news yesterday. I've seen it in the news where they have had complete fronts that were fake, they just walk up when no one is looking and put these in place, they transmit to a receiver your pin and bank codes

It would have been if I had continued to open it the rest of the way. At that point I stopped, called the bank, then called the police and waited for them to "relieve me" of my post.

Since I was the last person to use that machine, I was thinking that just driving away may have been a bad idea.

Me thinks that was not the case here.

The cash is kept in a safe in the lower portion, had you pulled it completely open you would have seen a lot of ATM guts and no cash whatsoever.
