Before I switched sigs off, I always found myself associating the company in the sig with the quality of the post. If the poster made a valid point or wrote something that made sense, for me that reflected well (in my mind) on the sig company, likewise stupid or pointless posts didn't.

I suppose it boils down to whether you think the message is stronger than the medium.

Would advertising on a beautiful girl's shirt derive more benefit than advertising on a fat ugly girl's shirt? Would advertising on the side of a Rolls Royce be better than on the side of a beaten up old van?

lagcam raises a good point. The internet is an interesting form of media. It is not TV, radio, newspapers or any other kind of media. I have done some business in Internet advertising and I can tell you some interesting things.

Yes, I think that it does matter where the advertisement is placed. It is better if an experienced webmaster recommends some affiliate program. That way, more other webmasters will sign up. Many on GFY know me as the creator of some TGPs and online resources, as well as a poster of useful comments. I try to keep my comments on topic and useful for the webmasters.

Yes, advertising on an ugly fat woman's shirt will not get many customers. Advertising on a beautiful thin woman's shirt will get customers. Having said that, advertising on the internet is not like advertising on the shirt at all. I am a fat man, but I am not posting any of my photos on the internet right now. All the surfers will see is a relevant useful post made by me, followed by your banner and text in the signature part of the post. Good luck.
