Anyone catch the standup special Robin Williams did earlier in the year? DAMN funny show. He hasn't done anything like this in 20 years. Miss the old Robin, much better than the "Patch Adams" Robin.

I saw Dana Carvey when he started out in a local comedy club . I think he was about 26 . Awesome performance

hmmmmmm.......... depends on your definition of comedian, some people just think standup comics, i include more, sketch comics, talk show hosts, comedy actors.

I rank David Letterman and Howard Stern as the two most influential comedians in my lifetime. Pretty much every comic I hear today, white guys, are doing Letterman. Stern's influence is much the same.

i just don't like the whole "best" thing. there are sooo many funny folk.

i still laugh out loud watching "a night at the opera" or "animal crackers". i as well begin to giggle just looking at will sasso's face -or will ferrel's for that matter. sophie tucker's jokes can't be beat for bawdy guffaws. gilda radner made my sides hurt when she did the "jennifer" show. recently my kid saw richard pryor in concert for her first time and she was enthralled. we have our ritual south park night. i don't laugh so much at george carlin as i worship at his feet. but greatest of all time?

Holy shit, I thought I was just about the only person left alive who even knew Bob Newhart ever did standup. He's HILARIOUS! I love the routine about the new desk clerk and King Kong.

Bill Hicks was very funny, but also pretty hit-and-miss. Some of his material really sucked and I think he got a little bitter toward the end before he died. Also, he was really pompous. He thoght his comedy was the only virtuous thing left in the world and could really be a gigantic asshole.

Yes, he certainly did! Those are some of my favorite routines. Have you ever heard the "Abe Lincoln Vs. Madison Avenue" phone routine? Oh, man. Funny, funny, funny.

not that i'm THAT old but yeah i grew up long enough ago to remember Newhart doing standup and he is a very funny man and totally original. I always watched the Tonight Show with my dad, i had no bedtime for some reason. His first TV show is very underated as well.


and i forgot one guy who could have been the funniest person i've ever heard or seen................Albert Brooks.

Albert Brooks gave up standup comedy early, his films are all really uneven but he's as funny as anybody. He just never found the right thing, he's a neurotic fuckup in real life. I also had a huge crush on his girlfriend when i was a teenager - Kathryn Harold the actress, not that well known, she played opposite Albert in Modern Romance and was also a regular in the Rockford Files and was Arnold Scwharzenegger's wife in one of his movies.

I like Albert Brooks as a comic actor, I don't think I have ever heard his standup, though. His movies are usually pretty funny. A couple of my favorites are "Defending Your Life" and "Lost in America". I love the part in Lost in America where his wife gets him out of a ticket by explaining how he is just trying to be like the guys in Easy Rider. In his Winnebago. Good stuff.

Monty Python is definitely the greatest all-time comedy troupe, but mostly because of John Cleese. John Cleese is, hands down, my favorite comic actor. ANYTHING he is in is hilarious, even that lame Out-of-Towners remake. I think the single funniest show ever to hit television is Fawlty Towers. They only made 12 episodes and every single one of them is side-splittingly funny. One of the funniest movies I have ever seen is A Fish Called Wanda (due credit to Kevin Kline and Jamie Lee Curtis in this one). I just wish John Cleese could live forever.

The Driving Instructor is one of my favorites, as well. The Submarine Commander is funny, but not as good as The Driving Instructor or some of his others (King Kong, Abe Lincoln, An Infinite Number of Monkeys, etc).

Comedy is subjective so "funniest" is debatable, but some of my favorites are:

Albert Brooks definately has a very unrealistic yet intelligent comedy style... very unique. Kind of like how Dennis Miller has a very intelligent super political comedy style... I love Dennis Miller. He was insane when I saw him at the Ohio State University in September. He offended EVERYONE.

Like all of Albert Brooks' movies Lost in America sorta got lost somewhere and wasn't as good as it could have been. BUT there is a scene in there, i think it's when he finds out he didn't get the promotion and not only that but he was fired ........... one of the funniest scenes i've ever seen, i was literally on the floor of the theater, dying with laughter. Garry Marshall played the boss i think? Haven't seen it a long long time.

I should have mentioned Woody Allen, i just don't like him for his private life, he is brilliant. Which is the movie where he's a hypochondriac? Zelig is a masterpiece of comedy i think but my favorite Woody film is Broadway Danny Rose.

Nobody's mentioned Steve Martin. I think he's great and for anybody over 35 i don't think a comedian ever had the popularity Steve Martin had for about a year or two in the late 70's. It was rock star kind of popularity. I don't know how many times he hosted Saturday Night Live but it's alot and he always did great monologues. He quit standup comedy soon as he got into movies. Most standups hate standup, all they dream about is getting a TV series or a movie career. Except for Jay Leno who still despite making huge money goes out and does standup comedy. Seinfeld also likes standup still.

i don't really find people like chris rock funny. i have a pretty dark / sick sense of humor so people like george carlin i find hilarious. monty python and shit like that i could never laugh at.

Smigel is a genius. The Triumph episodes make me cry.

I think Albert's boss in Lost in America was Michael Greene. I liked the movie, myself.

I believe Steve Martin was actually the very first comic to ever pack stadiums and auditoriums by himself. He created the role of the standup superstar. No one before him had done it. I do like his standup and his comedy songs but most of all I like Planes, Trains and Automobiles :) I do go out of my way to rent/buy Steve Martin movies, even the obscure ones. I enjoyed Novocaine and The Spanish Prisoner. His work as the sadistic dentist in Little Shop of Horrors is also among my favorites.

As for Wopdy Allen, the only personal scandal I know of attached to him is the whole thing with Soon-Yi. While that is a littl weird, it isn't all that bad. She's not his real daughter, the whole thing was consensual and they're still married. No matter what, he should have been up at the top of my list with Bill and Richard. The man is pure genius. As a standup he is unsurpasses and I love his movies, too.

I can't believe how funny that dog is. I have only seen a few of the routines, but wow... I have a WMV of the Star Wars premier and it just cramps me up with laughter every time I watch it.

Some people say that, but I am American and I love it. My father is American and he introduced me to it. He loved it :) Well, he was from Ireland but he came to the USA when he was still young, so... he's more American than anything else :)

I do have a bent for British comedy, though. I should have had Rowan Atkinson at the top of my list, too. Have any of you ever heard the School Headmaster routine? Unbelievable. I also love Fawlty Towers, Blackadder I, II, III and IV (more Rowan Atkinson), Are You Being Served and Red Dwarf.
