FLV or WMV for Downloadable Video?
I am already using quicktime, looking to add another file option, thoughts? I would think that the .flv format is as popular as wmv, if not more...
|
if its gonna be downloadable, i vote WMV. Its best associated with with downloads. Also gotta think in terms of least common denominator - would your dumbest traffic even know what to do with an flv?

.mov files are readable on windows media, as of the 10.5 release, not seeing what the big deal is about .mov files, unless your just trying to be an asshole beautifulfeetonline has been on the net for 5 years, 2.7 percent chargeback rate, all time. I have never had any complaints about my video... Well .wmv it is then. |
I was not just being an asshole, I just find it hard to believe that you currently only offer Quicktime (and have stayed in business this long...)
FLV is meant to be streamed not downloaded. There are plenty of stand-alone FLV players but they are not bundled with Windows, so the average surfer doesn't know how to play them. However, FLV is getting more popular because surfers are downloading them from streaming sites (tubes). If you want to offer an alternate downloadable format it should be WMV. If you want to be current in the game, you should stream in FLV and offer WMV/MOV as downloads. Also at this point offering H.264 is not beneficial, you are better off with iPod/iPhone compatible formats for QT. |

There is an HD site that is an affiliate of mine. My window sizes for the "HD" video is smaller than 1280X720. The main reason that I am remastering everything. After going back and forth with him, I decided to just go through everything I have and get it up to spec. The members area is going to be over 100 gb when it is all said and done. So much video to go through... Well thanks for the info then ProG, if that is the case and your right, perhaps my conversions will reflect this. |
Yes, the better quality you can give me for a download, the more it's gonna get passed around every tube and torrent known to man. A full screen, HD quality h264 is what I'm looking for these days.

yea flv isnt something u typically download. u should definitely be offering wmv - at least for this decade (and last). who knows whats next.
|
I just think if you are going through the trouble of doing H.264 you better be doing formats for iPod/iPhone as well, it's a much bigger market than HD (for now).
|
For downloadable, .wmv if you already giving them quicktime. FLV just isnt clear enough for download imo.
|
Also a note on trailers - I believe they should be streamed in flash only. There is zero benefit to offering multiple trailer formats, you are only wasting resources.
|
Yes, I am also doing a mobile codec.

I can assure you the problem will get worse if you start streaming FLVs. You can offer pseudo-streaming FLVs that everyone wants and have them ripped and uploaded, or offer formats that no one wants and suffer the consequences. Pick your poison. This industry is in the tubes.

You could also make a rtmpe h.264 stream. much harder to rip. Not impossible, but the average user will not be ripping it.
