Vegas Video Gurus

I'm having a helluva hard time chopping up some clips.

I have a 250K wmv8 file that is pretty damn good quality.
I trim a 10 second spot out of it, click file-->render as, and then save it as a 250K wmv8 file and its choppy as hell.
I tried saving it as a 512K file and the picture was clearer but still choppy as hell.
Do I need more frames per second or less or what do I need to do to have it come out the same quality as the original?

Babaganoosh 12-26-2002 07:06 PM

Good question. I have been trying that too with similar results. The only way I can make it look decent, the clip ends up being HUGE!

Morgan 12-26-2002 07:13 PM

save it as a 10 sec. avi file and then use cleaner5 to batch it into decent quality wmv files.

brocklander 12-26-2002 07:38 PM

I know how to fix the problem:

File>Exit

Start Menu>Programs>Adobe>Premiere 6.5

Vegas Video is to video editing, as MS Paint is to graphic design...

multisexsite 12-26-2002 07:41 PM

Cut it with a knife

Morgan 12-26-2002 07:41 PM

Dont listen to brock. hes just bummed cuz mike69 banned him. :1orglaugh

Shoplifter 12-26-2002 07:41 PM

Vegas is a good tool if all you have to work with is WMV files.

My question though: Does anyone know how to do clear background text?

uh, then why am I posting?!?!

brocklander 12-26-2002 07:52 PM

If you used Premiere, you could do File>Export directly into Cleaner (which comes bundled with Premiere).

Time = Money

Morgan 12-26-2002 08:09 PM

People that dont often use video editing software dont really have time to spend learning premiere. A child could use vegas. Thats why sooooo many people on this board will tell you thats their program of choice.

Time = Money

brocklander 12-26-2002 08:53 PM

I won't disagree there. If you are just doing basic cuts and dissolves, then yes, you could use any program (even the Microsoft editing program bundled with XP or the program bundled with your DV card). But when you want to step up to a more professional product that wont break your bank, Premiere is industry standard.

The layouts of both programs are almost identical, so not sure why you think Premiere takes longer to master than Vegas. Perhaps Vegas has prettier icons and bigger text....and gives you a lollipop when you are done editing. Adobe isn't pretty, but it gets the more complex jobs done a lot faster. And don't forget the native support for After Effects, which is published by the same company.

Where can I get a copy of cleaner5? Who makes it?

I'm sure adobe makes a great product, but all I'm doing is chopping clips for movie galleries. Adobe premiere would be overkill for me.

It'd be like telling someone they needed photoshop 6 if all they wanted to do was crop a photo. There's plenty of shareware/freeware that can handle that just fine.

Movie galleries? They don't convert, do they? :Graucho

BTW, what program do *you* use for cropping pictures?

As for getting Cleaner, I'm afraid getting it from

http://www.discreet.com/products/cleaner will cost you about $530. Are you in high school or college or know somebody that is? If so, go here:

http://academicsuperstore.com/market..._srch=cleaner&

and get the academic version for under $200. Otherwise, there is a program I heard of that you can get software for free, called Naporpheusazaa or somethin' like that... I wouldn't know, that program doesn't work with my 1200 baud modem and my Apple ][ C.

brocklander 12-27-2002 01:39 AM

BTW, does Photoshop 7 crop pictures as good as 6? Or do you need the older version?

Lenny, what is your frame rate set at? It sounds like you may doing 12 or 8 frames per second. Anything lower than 15 frames per second can be detected by the eye as being "choppy".

Edit... Of the online reviews that I've read, Vegas ranks right up there with Premiere, and in some cases will out perform. I use Vegas. However, I'm a huge fan of Adobe products. I love my photoshop 7, but I could not afford Premiere at the time. Plus, I read that Vegas and Adobe are very similar, so I opted for a less expensive video editor.

I've been on Vegas for a while now, and I feel like I'm ready for a little more power... I've been talking to one of my old movie friends, and if all goes right he'll be hooking me up with a copy of AVID that his company can get at a discounted price. :) I hope... I hope... I hope... :)

Snake Doctor 12-27-2002 07:05 AM

Brocklander, no movie galleries don't convert I just like giving free shit away:winkwink:

I still have photoshop 5.5 here, but I rarely use it. When I need to crop a photo I use paint shop.

Redshoe, the frame rate of the original and the file I'm rendering are both 30fps.

brocklander 12-27-2002 10:45 AM

I assume you are referring to AvidXpress DV, which only runs on Mac or XP and doesn't require a breakout box. This costs about $1700 normally or half that for academic pricing.

If you are talking about the full-blown Avid system, is that company going to hook you up with the required hardware and breakout box? If not, that's like putting a Yugo engine in a Porsche and calling it a Porsche. Expect to spend another couple of grand there. In fact, the better solution is to purchase a full turnkey Avid system (start at around $4000) since these systems are tested and guaranteed to work. Building your own Avid system is tricky and not recommended unless you know what you are doing.

Have you thought about Media 100 (Mac only).? Another great system and super easy to use. It's a hefty price tag but you can find used systems super cheap.

If you do ever bump up, you're going to wish you had learned Premiere, since the editing functionaliy is almost exact.

Don't believe everything you read. Install both products and see yourself...then you'll be empowered to make your *own* decisions.

I was....that guy thought he was experienced in the ways of Photoshop, but didn't even know Photoshop 7 was out, lol.

Furthermore, I wouldn't wish Jasc's Paint Shop Pro on anybody. Photoshop is industry standard (and more expensive) for a reason. You can crop with MS Paint if you want to, but I still don't recommend it. I think it's great that Adobe and Macromedia products have similar tool sets and GUI's across their products, which makes learning them easier.

In fact Paint Shop Pro is a great analogy to Photoshop:

PaintShopPro = Vegas Video
Photoshop = Premiere

Both can do the same things to a certain extent, but only one set of software does it better, faster, stronger (what commercial is that from?) ;-)

hibbidiji 12-27-2002 11:36 AM

Jesus folks, you sound like ford vs chevy assholes

I use vegas a lot.
I have avid xpress 3.5 on a 2gig p4 with 2 gigs of ram and a 450gb raid. it cost a lot less than 4K and it runs GREAT. I have done a lot of editing on a lot of different systems. people that say that you HAVE To have this or that are jackasses.

Anyone that says you HAVE to use premiere or a FULL Avid system:
when you have to jot down a phone number or a name in windows, do you load notepad or do you load up word, get all your macros running, format a mice A4 page and put it in a pretty font?

If im tossing up 2 minute clips on my site I use vegas, if I'm editing a feature I use Avid Xpress DV 3.5 and output it to a sony DV deck. Try and convince me that with as few flashy effects as we use in this BIZ I need a full Avid rig.

Oh,
and NAHANAHANH to you premiere people...
who said time=money? well, while you're spending all that time rendering you're FX to see if you fucked up, I'm rendering a final movie and having a drink.

I never claimed to be experienced in anything dickhead. As a matter of fact I started this thread to ask for help with something.
I don't give a flying fuck what the latest version of photshop is, I pay designers to know that shit.

The point I was making was that you don't need a bazooka to kill a fly.

Snake Doctor 12-27-2002 11:54 AM

Oh and Redshoe, thanks for the tips.
Turns out I just got a bad copy of that one video, all of the others I chopped today came out great.

OMG, you're joking right? Hey fuckface, if you're going to post a link to a review of Vegas 3, you might want to pick a more recent one that reviews Premiere 6.5, which has realtime previews.

HAHA, what an idiot.
