Romney defends Mass. health care mandate

Quote:

Romney trumpeted the achievement of near-universal coverage in Massachusetts, while declining to acknowledge that the mechanism he used to achieve that goal ? a requirement that individuals buy private insurance ? is the same as the much-criticized mandate of Obama?s plan.

Is Romney more of a neo-conservative, than the old school Republican?

Since you've read this one already TheDemon, why didn't you respond? Is Romney an atypical Republican, and violating the constitution since 2005, by forcing Mass. residents to purchase healthcare or pay a tax penalty?

Last time I checked most states require people to get car insurance. How is this different? I don't hear any republican talk about the un-Constitutionality of that.

Romney is a pre-youtube politician. He would have done great in the 90s... now not so much. He's a lot like Steele, he reflexively tells people what they want to hear.

If you don't want to buy car insurance, you have the option to not own or drive a car. Health mandate you get just for breathing. Huge difference.

I agree with you on this for sure.

yes and when you "choose" not to have health insurance and get hurt and I end up having to pay for YOUR "choice" that's fair?

Mitt Romney just plays a conservative for work. IMO guy is personally a hardcore liberal.

He adopted Republican values only when he needed the votes to further his political career, but we do see his actual liberal qualities come out every so often.

Remember, this is a guy who was pro-choice and fought for gay rights 20 years ago back when gays were still being demonized. There is no chance that a real conservative would have done the things he did in the past.
