ipad pre-orders sold out

I still think it will flop in the end, but for now seems they are selling these things:

yup I have one on pre order.. I see it as a toy or gadget to use sitting on the toilet or in bed watching tv.. So this will be a good fit for me and i don't need to wait for future generations to get features that should be on the first cause it's just a new toy

Not only won't it flop, I think the iPad will begin to make books obsolete.

I agree.. the ipad will be ideal for reading newspapers,books and magazines its not as clumsy or bulky as a laptop or netbook to use or leave on a coffee table.

I also think it will be a huge success.

I could use one. I mean, you could always use a fancy gadget.
Not sure if this first generation will be any good.
But if they keep developing it and don't abandon the idea, it will kill the newspaper business.
No one will be sad when the unmanageable and dirty printed newspapers die out...

IPad = Game changer

When that happens expect the quality of the information you get to go down. Websites will never be able to afford the budget to really investigate the news. They will just regurgitate what they get from TV.

Want one, but waiting.

Not bad for a more expensive version of the Kindle. Maybe version 2 is worth holding out for?

It looks cool, but I won't be getting one. It won't make books obsolete either. Maybe 10 years from now, but not now.

The reason is simple. The cost of the technology makes it not readily available for everyone. Most people are not going to drop $500 so they can read books when the can go by the the book for a few dollars or check the book out from the library for free. As the technology gets cheaper then I can see it really making a move on books.

Think about the cell phone. In 1989-1990 I worked at Radio Shack. We had three different cell phones that we sold and the cheapest one was $999 and they went up to around $1600. The plans were expensive too. It cost about $50 a month plus 40 cents a minute to use it. So clearly, only those that either had money or really needed one would get a cell phone.

15 years later they are giving the phones away and you can get cheap plans that have tons of free minutes and now everyone has one. So I don't think the iPad or the Kindle or the Nook or any of these things will kill books until you can buy one of them for $50 and get cheap/free access to get to the content.

Yeah I have heard of that. Those are mostly older classic books and some others where they have gotten author permission. It doesn't give you the new Stephen King book or anything else that has been out recently. You will still need to buy those. It also doesn't change the fact that the Ipad is still $500 or more.
