do you have somebody in your family who literally knows nothing about their computer?

i just literally banged my head against the wall three times hard. i'm wobbly.

LiveDose 03-25-2010 07:11 PM

Several people. It's frustrating taking those calls at times...

Spunky 03-25-2010 07:12 PM

My old mum just started a couple years ago,she tries hard but can't remember the simple things

Porn Grounds 03-25-2010 07:15 PM

Yes everyone in my family. It's brutal.

candyflip 03-25-2010 07:17 PM

I have a Windows box here at the house just for this purpose. I have a few family members I help out and when they need it, I just remote connect to their box and let them see how to get done what they need to get done.

KRosh 03-25-2010 07:54 PM

I know a bunch of people on GFY that have that issue

Yes.

Also, most of my friends are the same way. They use it to surf the web, check email, and that's about it. Same for most of the models who work for me. They barely can do anything. Anytime some question comes up, I get an email.

I am not sure where all of these Mr Wizards are from GFY board lore. The one's who are endlessly downloading and thieving. I can't say I know of ONE in my immediate or secondary circles of friends and acquaintances who are stealing everything on the web.

:2 cents:

NaughtyRob 03-25-2010 08:20 PM

I get calls for very simple stuff from a few certain family members all the time.

fatfoo 03-25-2010 08:21 PM

Computers? What is there to know? You just press a button and it does something. That's it.

heymatty 03-25-2010 08:28 PM

Tech support for the wife is terrible. I can't imagine how many times I've used the phrase "I can't dumb it down any more".

Luckily tech support tickets have gone down since I got her a Mac.

What button do I press to send a smack upside your head?

I feel your pain,Mutt. I feel your pain. Explaining is an exercise in futility with some relatives.

Mutt 03-25-2010 08:48 PM

ha well glad i'm not the only one - i knew i wasn't but still nice to know. what's scary about this person, one of my sisters, is that she's had a computer at work for 20 years i think. i guess at work they have an IT guy and when something goes wrong you just call for him.

PurrrsianPussyKat 03-25-2010 08:55 PM

My nana is 83 and has a computer. I'll just let you imagine all the horror she's put me through.

Bird 03-25-2010 09:34 PM

moeloubani 03-25-2010 10:19 PM

the other day i walked up to my dad as he sat in front of his computer and he looked puzzled, he told me that for some reason the cursor keeps moving on the computer and he has been trying to make it stop for hours, i told him to take his cell phone off of the space bar :/

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 03-25-2010 10:22 PM

It took like 3 years to get my trained enough to make simple calls on a cellphone, which he still refuses to use. Let's not even get into computers...

SomeCreep 03-25-2010 11:44 PM

eh, ya proLLy

Farang 03-25-2010 11:45 PM

My in-laws refer to the entire internet as 'Google'. When their internet goes down we get a call 'Google is broken'.

Be thankful your in-laws know what Google is. My mum is getting better with her laptop now, but initially I used to go nuts when describing how to do simple things. When I sent her links on msn she asked what does all that mean LOL. I'm like "Click the fucking link"

Also, she never knew what the address bar was, to type urls into. VERY frustrating.

emmanuelle 03-26-2010 06:31 AM

I've been holding out on buying my dad a computer, because I know I'll be over there reformatting every weekend.
He's gonna fall for every phishing scam out there

ottopottomouse 03-26-2010 06:38 AM

I use my mum as a tester for any instructions I am writing for someone. If she can follow them without making a huge fucking mess of her computer then anybody can :thumbsup

My Grandma is the only one that is an utter liability. She doesn't use her computer enough to remember how to do things and also will click randomly on absolutely anything if she gets stuck. She is 85 though so does have a reasonable excuse.

tranza 03-26-2010 07:33 AM

yes, i have! ¬¬

spazlabz 03-26-2010 07:36 AM

I used to get the weekly tech support call from my mother in law until I started asking for credit card information (jokingly of course). Now she seems to be pretty self reliant :)

A few in my family don't know a whole lot, but they know at least enough to be dangerous. Several years ago in my pre-porn life I worked for a hi-tech company. I worked in a test area that tested and calibrated printers. They did a round of hiring to get more testers for a graveyard shift. I had to train most of these people and the job required you to work on a computer all day. The first day of training I say to a guy, "Just click here." and I point to the screen. He looks at me oddly. I say "Just use the mouse and select this box" and point again. He says, "Mouse?" The guy didn't even know what a mouse was. I wondered what the interview to get the job was like.

natas 03-26-2010 05:45 PM

My nan is 92 years old. My mom bought her a laptop.

Somehow she emails me. God knows how she even knows how to turn the thing on.

Elli 03-26-2010 05:48 PM

Yes, I have a few of those. Weirdly, my mother is a retired Systems Analyst but she always worked on internal "dumb" workstations, so the PC is a big change to her. She told me about a news article she found online the other day. I asked what site it was on. She said, "Oh, I was in Hotmail." So I'm guessing it was MSN. She doesn't know what "home page" means or anything like that. She's happy she finally got Media Player working to listen to her CDs.

Sly 03-26-2010 05:50 PM

About a month ago I caught my mom saying "The Google." I've been giving her shit ever since.

Actually it's truly amazing. My mom has been on the Internet as long as I have. And she spends a lot of time on the Internet. Yet the things she doesn't know just shock me.

About once a month my dad will call me and ask something like "hey can you buy used cell phones on the Internet?" "Uh, yeh dad, it's called eBay." What makes this even more funny is he regularly buys cars from the other side of the country completely over the Internet.

PornMD 03-26-2010 06:02 PM

Yes. My brother is the only one besides me who's apt with computers in the fam - everyone else just has absolutely no clue what to do if anything goes wrong, how to do some simple things, paranoid of viruses, etc. It's not like they haven't been around computers/internet for 10+ years or anything.

_Richard_ 03-26-2010 07:01 PM

what's funnier.. grannies who get computers right off the bat..

haha i've heard people call it 'the google' - older people.

Jim_Gunn 03-26-2010 10:01 PM

I don't have this same experience. My 66 year old mom is a Facebook addict, exchanging pics of her nephew's & nieces' children with other family members.

TheSenator 03-26-2010 10:42 PM

I am the fucking help desk of the family.

Chosen 03-27-2010 04:26 AM

Yes most of my family members...

Octopus 03-27-2010 04:34 AM

Yes, my grandpa
