For all of you people that are claiming the Healthcare bill
 

...is a windfall for the insurance companies...why was it then that the insurance companies spent...reportedly...hundreds of millions of dollars in an attempt to defeat the bill?

because they are not going to be able to uprate you anymore and they are not able to deny insurance..

those two factors are what makes and breaks insurance companies...

I actually think they were spending just to change a few things. Many insurance companies saw their stock go up today and over the last several months health insurance company stocks have gone up an average of 20%. They stand to make a lot of money form this. Yes, they will have to take on some people with pre-existing stuff and they will lose money from them, but they will also be getting millions of new customers many of whom will hardly ever use their insurance.
