Six members of my high school class have killed themselves in 15 years

Something I found out this weekend through somebody's random Facebook post after the latest suicide.

My class had about 250 people in it so not a massive amount of of people and we were a er middle class, middle America type of town. We will all be around 33 years old .

Of course, some people will have died but that many to suicide feels a bit excessive? It has been sitting on my brain this weekend.

Wow you had a lot of pupils in your class if you had 250. We had at the most around 30 pupils in one class and yeah I think a lot of people just cant hack life and when it goes pear shape as life sometimes does, that seems to be the only way out for them ..very sad

BTW did your read or see about those three people that jumped from a tower block the other week ..crazy stuff

Boobzooka 03-22-2010 05:20 AM

Were any of them named Heather?

That is unsettling. Take care of yourself.

Zorgman 03-22-2010 05:25 AM

Don't think about it. Just enjoy your life.
If you have to worry about everyone else's problems you would never enjoy your own life.

Back to work.

Maybe it is a US to UK translation thing? Class means the people in your 'year' back home as opposed those that actually sit in the classroom with you? So, there were 250 people my age in my school. Which isn't tiny but not huge either for a high school. Maybe you went to a small school?

I am not sure I have heard that story, now. We had one not too long ago off of the tower blocks in our town.

we "europeans" mean the amount of pupils in a classroom when we speak of class. what you mean by class I would call year

In the States it actually means both....the class you are sitting in and then *THE* class of your year.

It happens. Keep in mind, that over 150,000 people in the world die every single day. Of course methods of death will vary, but you shouldn't worry about it. In the larger scheme of things, everything that is happening is completely normal, even the deaths of those people you knew.

Paul Markham 03-22-2010 06:38 AM

Seems a lot do you have any clue for it, is the area depressed financially?

4pleasure_Davide 03-22-2010 06:42 AM

Damn, that's a lot ! :(

No..it is a middle class suburb of Philadelphia. It is much wealthier now than when the people my age where growing up there, that is for sure, but it wasn't a hard done by town then either.

BobChezule 03-22-2010 08:41 AM

A few members of my high school class have committed suicide and a few others have died of drug overdose. It's always odd to hear about it.

Sarah_Jayne 03-22-2010 08:57 AM

Just was reading the obit of the one that happened this week. Locked himself in a car and mixed household chemicals to cause a lethal gas. He put warning signs on the car windows to alert the rescue people about the gas that would be in the car.

Gouge 03-22-2010 10:13 AM

Out of the 480 from my graduating class we have lost 21 in the past 16 years, and thats just the people we know about. I'm sure there are others that have died we have not found out about yet. What made my class so big was the fact they rearranged the school districts the summer before our freshman year.

wow, he really thought that out!

MrBottomTooth 03-22-2010 10:23 AM

At least they're offing themselves. Around here everyone seems to be getting / dying of cancer in their thirties or fourties.

crockett 03-22-2010 10:26 AM

I know of 3 people I went to high school with that killed themselves and those are just people I knew. I also had a few friends that were killed that I went to school with. One was my cousin whom was killed in a private plane crash, another in a car crash and one girl was murdered by her boyfriend.

I've never looked up on any sites to see if there were any more, those are just people I knew about.

I also had one kid I went to school with whom ended up killing someone in a robbery. He was one of those types that you saw it coming a mile away. He was always a bully in school and ended up getting heavily into drugs.

I don't keep up with many of the people I went to school with now days, but it does make you wonder from time to time how they ended up.

Martin 03-22-2010 10:40 AM

Is it always dull and grey in your area?

We were actually one of the smaller districts in our area. I am sure the class sizes are even bigger now. It has picked up a lot more of the Philly commuting crowd over the past decade or so.

I am sure there are more that have died and people just don't know about it. Previous to Facebook, if I had died over here nobody from school would have known unless they bumped into my sister. Which, is sort of okay with me.

3 people in my class of 20 have committed suicide. 2 lads who lived at the end of my street (not together...), and one other guy whose son died tragically. So very sad. I knew all three of them quite well, until i left UK in 91.

Three out of twenty really is a high percentage.

CunningStunt 03-23-2010 02:23 AM

For once I feel empathy for you.

Be well.

Waddymelon 03-23-2010 02:26 AM

Why are you complaining? Most people would be happy with a 1:17 ratio.

John-ACWM 03-23-2010 06:14 AM

I guess any number is a big number concerning suicides.
