Is it too early to say that MESSI the greatest footballer ever?

I never saw Pele pull stunts like this, Maradona was fairly close, Ronaldo (white) has his moments, but each week, Messi shows off his incredible skills:

Shame about the rest of the Argentinian team. :1orglaugh

The Demon 03-21-2010 10:49 PM

Way too early, I wouldn't put him in the top 10...Yet...

baddog 03-21-2010 10:57 PM

I watched the last World Cup and not knowing shit about who was good in soccer at the time, was like "damn, this Messi dude is all over the fucking place, in so many plays, etc....he IS that fuckin' team!"

I dunno enough to say if he's the best ever, but he's sure impressed a soccer n00b like me.

Nubianprince 03-22-2010 12:13 AM

ain't no doubt messi is the best soccer player right now .. dude got mad skills .. i love watching him play.. look how he destroyed that german team this past week

Wow, you're really not so bright are you.

For the kids at the back of the class, Messi gets the ball at 0:30 seconds in.

Maradona, Pele and Garrincha were way better, they could do something like that almost every single game. Plus, Messi is amazing, but only in Barcelona system, out of Barca he didn't even exist. He's undeniably talented, but still far away of being the best player ever, I wouldn't even rank him in a top 20. And I'm from Argentina, so that mean ssomething.

adamneve 03-22-2010 12:49 AM

he still needs to prove himself in the World Cup this summer

v4 media 03-22-2010 12:51 AM

Barca is set up the way Messi wants to play.. he's not as good with Argentina.
Still a great player though.

sandman! 03-22-2010 12:51 AM

never heard of him......

41 is nuts. He's more of a poacher though, he doesn't run past 6 players and stick it in the top corner.

Will probably be seeing him in the Premier League next year. Or at Real.

I agree with Adam, this summer will tell if he is the Greatest Player Ever. Right now he is the best on this Planet with Wayne Rooney second, but this summer both of them have the chance to take it to that next level. I for one am excited to watch this years World Cup, there is such an array of talent, I really can't wait.

pradaboy 03-22-2010 04:59 AM

Messi is amazing but I agree he has to prove himself in the national team first.

plus 3 in league of champions

The Demon 03-22-2010 06:03 AM

I'd put Messi #2, under Ronaldo, for best in the world right now.

Serial Pervert 03-22-2010 06:11 AM

he's great, fact, but it might be too soon, we never know what's gonna happen

CaptainHowdy 03-22-2010 06:29 AM

I prefer Neil Peart...

I must be missing the humour here, what does Rush have to do with Lionel Messi?

I obviously need more beer to enjoy this banter.

Damn , Messi for #2 ? you must lost your mind :disgust

bufferover 03-23-2010 05:02 AM

Not bad but it's still early to tell

Paul Markham 03-23-2010 05:16 AM

Maradona - Good
Pele - Great
George Best.

Saw all three of them play and Best would do that game after game in the days of defenders like Norman Hunter of Leeds, Nobby Stiles of Man U and Chopper Harris of Chelsea. Today's defenders are scared to do what half these guys did to stop a player dictating the game.

The only thing that stopped George Best getting the true acclaim he deserved was playing international football for Northern Ireland and drinking. But he was still the best player I've ever seen.

Would still love to see Messi play in the Premiership and see how he copes with the defenses there.

Yes it means that you don't know what you are talking about !!

For a start Messi the man has only played for Barca and a constantly squabbling Argentina national side presently managed by one of theor greatest players and poorest managers.

Barca picked him up when he was a frail (actually sick) young boy and nurtured him to what he is now. He has in previous seasons shown flashes of the brilliance he is now showing, but being so lightweight, he was often taken out by a consistent physical approach.

The last few games however have shown a new physical strength to his game, a Maradona-esque ability to brush aside physical challenges and on Sunday night against Zaragosa for me he came of age.

It is still of course too early to rank him too far up the list of greatest players ever. He will need to dominate on the international stage at a World Cup final, and this year with the likes of Higuain and Tevez alongside him, he should get the chance to do that. Argentina for me have the World Cup to lose.

Of the three current best players in the world, I would put him marginally ahead of Ronaldo and Rooney on current form, and what I like about him (and Rooney actually), is that unlike Ronaldo, he plays for the team and not team himself.

Very well said!

Personally I would love to see how he fares in the EPL.

Messi is having an amazing year but it will only be cemented if he can perform well at the World Cup, which with Maradona in "charge" will not be easy. Lets see how he does for the next 5-10 years before he starts being called the best ever though.

cykoe6 03-23-2010 07:23 AM

There is someone that knows his soccer, (football).
