Windows 7 is pathetic

So I hooked up my new PC today running Windows 7. Overall, I like it but a pain in the ass is what all that security crap is. I run IIS, ASP, and SQL Server on there and getting all that shit to work under Windows 7 is next to impossible, at least so far. I could have set all of this stuff up on an XP box in about 15 minutes and after working on it all day, I'm still not done. I keep getting a message when my ASP code tries to make an ADO connection to the database using Windows Authentication that says "Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\IUSR". I have the IUSR login setup and have given it access to the tables in my SQL database but no, it still won't let me in. And I need to have this shit up and running by tomorrow morning to start processing orders again. Goddamn Windows 7.

If anyone can help, please jump in and tell me what I'm doing wrong. :thumbsup

Windows 7... Good luck with that...

Do you just reply to every thread, whether you have anything to say or not?

candyflip 03-21-2010 08:04 PM

He's awesome like that.

Disable the security nag - http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windo...windows-vista/

Argos88 03-21-2010 09:25 PM

Windows Vista sucked.

Never tried Windows 7 and I won't risk trying it after the bad Vista experience.

Stay safe, Keep XP. If ain't broken don't fix it.

I love my XP :)

Yes he does, and with senseless bullshit.

Btw, I love Windows 7. I went straight from XP to 7 and so far it has been excellent.

bronco67 03-21-2010 10:56 PM

I'd have to agree that Windows is pretty great.

You can disable UAC for a better experience. Look into it.

PersianKitty 03-21-2010 11:55 PM

Just went from XP Pro to 7 Pro on a new desktop and laptop... avoided Vista as much as possible except to help family here and there when they issues...

Haven't run into anything major that I couldn't google and figure out on my own.. but then I'm not running it as server for anything etc..

Tulku 03-22-2010 01:16 AM

If you want to run it like a server why don't you install Windows Server 2008 R2 ??

Pandoras 03-22-2010 02:48 AM

I'm happy with my XP :thumbsup

scarlettcontent 03-22-2010 03:03 AM

better use linux for server stuff

Zester 03-22-2010 03:43 AM

I will try Windows 7 on a different computer and more if I find it better than XP.
right now there is very few things I need that I can't do with XP

I can drive to the store in a 78 Pinto, very few places it wont go, but why the fuck would I want to?

SpongeBub 03-22-2010 04:03 AM

The PC I bought (pretty good deal from newegg.com - an HP Pavillion with 6GB of RAM and a dual core 2.5GHZ processor, 750MB HD for $399, free shipping) came with Windows 7. I could wipe the HD and install XP but I'd really rather get on Windows 7, since that will be the os that MS supports ongoing. It's really pretty good, considering what a fuckup Vista was (that one I refused to use). This PC also has a nice sound card with digital inputs, which I like because I am a musician (once pro, now amateur) and I use Sonar for recording. I'll be able to take a digital output from my mixer and go straight in.

And as for installing Server R2, I don't really use this as a server; it just has my business apps on it and my SQL database. No one but me accesses it, so running Windows Server would be big-time overkill (plus I'd have to buy it and I don't want to spend the beans).

I may disable the UAC but so far, I have been able to get past every hurdle but this last one and that is not UAC related but instead has to do with the way they have changed DB access in SQL Server 2008.

I will do my billing today on my XP machine and continue to pursue this access issue. I know the answer is out there on some website; I just have to phrase my search in a way that brings it to me.

Jay_StandAhead 03-22-2010 04:40 AM

you can use windows XP mode until you figure out how to make everything work under 7. (although I'm not sure if XP mode will run IIS and etc the way you want)

I run Windows 7, SQL Server 2008, etc. and it was pretty quick to setup. Did you run the following against the DB:
sp_grantlogin 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE' or IUSR if that's what you're using?

tomud 03-22-2010 01:41 PM

wait for SP1 or even SP2 before u buy Windows 7.
Stay with XP as long as possible :pimp

Windows 7 is great for the final user, but for server stuff is just as bad as Vista. :2 cents:

minddust 03-22-2010 02:05 PM

Windows 7 server? WHAT? hehe

I would never run a Windows server facing the internets. UNLESS you know your shit/hire someone to patch the swiss cheese that Windows is.

2MuchMark 03-22-2010 02:05 PM

Just heard today that IE9 will not run on Windows XP, only Vista and W7.

I'm sure he's just using it as a dev machine. No one in their right mind would use Win7 as a production server...

I was all prepared to have to work in XP mode for a few of my older programs. I didn't have any problems at all. I believe I had one install that asked me what O/S it had previously worked correctly in so it could run it through compatibility mode.

Beyond that .. doing all my everyday things for the last 10 days or so on the new Win7 desktop...but then I don't get beyond basic kinda techy stuff.

john FVC 03-23-2010 10:47 AM

I lasted 24hrs with Windows 7. Its ok if you are a surfer but for working, XP still is the one to use.

That DOES work great! I have an old program that I use on a couple of things (not work related because every serious program I use works fine on win 7) and it only works on XP. So I downloaded the virtual pc thinking it was going to be a pain in the ass to install...

I had it up and running in minutes. So now if I ever need to use xp I just click on virtual pc and there it is. :)

brentbacardi 03-23-2010 11:27 AM

I went from xp to vista, made it work but vista sucked soooo bad! Got a new computer with W7 and none of the HD video editing software I had been using would work properly so I was fucked over for about 2 weeks not being able to work. Finally figured it out and am very happy with it for video editing and just surfing and stuff. Much faster than Vista and no crashing and freezing as of yet (fingers crossed but ive already had it for a few months so thats good).

I don't do so much web stuff or use it for servers or anything like that so not sure about that end of it but its wayyy better than Vista fo sho!

bloggingseo 03-23-2010 11:42 AM

I hated windows 7 at first but now I really like it. It took some getting used to.

Sexretary 03-23-2010 01:04 PM

I use XP on most of my machines but recently bought a laptop with Wondows 7 and so far not a problem. Better than Vista in my opinion.
