How long should a hosting company take to install a script for you ?

A support ticket is sent asking for a script installed let us say for example Os Commerce or WP nothing too complicated.

What is a "acceptable" time frame for this to be completed?

Fully managed server and support are included for this scenario.

Let me hear your input.

fatfoo 03-18-2010 08:56 PM

1 or 2 days, I would say.

Linguist 03-18-2010 08:58 PM

If you're with Mojohost, probably within an hour or two

Barefootsies 03-18-2010 08:58 PM

Most would have this done in a few hours.

I would say, "max." should be 24 hours.

Maybe I will ask them when the estimate is. Thanks for input

National Net as well would have most likely have it done in same time frame or less I bet :(

He has good support , I used him in the past for a test project and on a virtual account his support was very fast.

I'm sure he is, that's why I'd like to hear from him on this.

heymatty 03-18-2010 09:13 PM

Within the hour. Or at worst a reply to the ticket saying when the install can be done if its in depth etc.

Nat net are almost always well within the hour.

Domain Diva 03-18-2010 09:29 PM

If i was requesting someone to do something such as that..i would be hoping for a 48 hr turnaround.

Hoping for 48 hours?

Unless the entire datacenter was on fire, under attack, or had all the servers simultaneously die, I'd be feeling pretty bitchy if it wasn't done in under 2. Or at the very least, the ticket acknowledged with a time frame for completion.

I am a happy Mojohost customer though, so my wait is never long.

Im not just talking hosting requests..if I ask anyone to do something i dont expect them to drop everything for me....I wait what i think is a reasonable time... of course i would like it done yesterday like everyone else ....patience is a virtue :winkwink:

I always thought that installing of scripts by the host was done as a favor for vip clients... it's actually standard practice with most hosts now a days?

CyberHustler 03-18-2010 09:53 PM

I install my own scripts...

Sosa 03-18-2010 09:53 PM

Mojohost is usually on it for me within a few hours and done that day.

sandman! 03-18-2010 09:55 PM

24 hours or less i would say.

bloggerz 03-18-2010 09:57 PM

12 hrs max

epitome 03-18-2010 10:28 PM

50% of the time Naked Hosting will have a script install done for me within a half hour to an hour. The other 50% of the time it's under 3 hours, but stretching it out to three hours has only happened once or twice and it was a more complex script.

Reflected always gets script installs done for me in under an hour; many times a half hour.

I'd be happy with a routine script install within 24 hours unless I elevated the ticket and asked for priority.

managed hosting vs unmanaged hosting.

Managed hosting == the host does everything for you, setup, scripts, whatever.
unmanaged hosting == they plug it in, make sure it has network access, and then you're on your own.

I come from a unix admin and security background so I always go with unmanaged hosting. I've noticed that almost all of the hosts on gfy are in the managed category.

Not sure how long the actual install takes, but unless something really weird is going on, the install itself would start within minutes of receipt.

aniloscash 03-18-2010 11:48 PM

24 hours or end of the following business day which ever is longer. really no excuse for anything else in my opinion.

dgraves 03-18-2010 11:55 PM

mojo is super fast with shit like that. we just switch to mojo and they kick ass!

martinsc 03-18-2010 11:57 PM

I wouldn't want to wait any longer than 2-3 hours

Managed dedicated and they happily do script installs. In fact, they will do just about anything. The other day I had my host install MaxMind geo IP and block China by htaccess. It was getting out of hand because I was getting linked from Chinese forums (amazing how much traffic they can send) and at certain times during the day up to 15% of my traffic was Chinese and I did not want my trade partners to blacklist me. I told my host that I needed it because if I didn't get it under control I wouldn't have trades and wouldn't have a business. They understood and got it done -- it was Naked Hosting.

With Reflected, we have no control panels. I email support to do EVERYTHING, including setting up email addresses. There isn't a single thing I do myself.

Even on virtual accounts, support will usually install a script, but it will cost you. The average I've seen is $25 a pop.

d-null 03-19-2010 12:17 AM

damn the internet has gone to shit :2 cents:

naughtylaura 03-19-2010 02:01 PM

National net just added a domain and set up wordpress for me in 4 mins...

its easy install it yourself :P by the time you put in a ticket most the time you can be done :)

Hi everyone!

Brad

18teens 03-19-2010 07:01 PM

AmeriNOC gets started on anything I ask within a matter of minutes.

Rochard 03-19-2010 09:25 PM

I host with National Net, and if it takes them more than twenty minutes I'm really surprised. Late at night when I'm working on blogs I'll put in a tick with Nat Net asking them to install a domain and create a DB for WP, and bam - it's all done plus they've installed the most recent version of WP without me asking.

National Net rocks.

Paul Markham 03-20-2010 02:01 AM

We're on Phatservers so the response is usually within an hour or two. 24 hours a day.

Mutt 03-20-2010 08:23 AM

i've never asked a hosting company to do script installations for me - is this mostly just Wordpress and scripts that are very commonplace or should I be expecting my hosting company to install almost any kind of script for me?

Argos88 03-20-2010 11:42 AM

1 hour...

count of monte cristo 03-20-2010 11:52 AM

if you are a host that cares, then quickly

hosts that care:
cavecreek.com
nakedhosting.com
gotwebhost.com
way3.com
mojohost.com

maybe a few others, but unless it slipped through the cracks, sounds shoddy

Domain Broker 03-20-2010 11:56 AM

Are you too retarded to install a script yourself?

This is the similar situation with adulthosting :thumbsup

I emailed support this morning concerning, scripts, databases & mysql set up & within 5 mins I was informed it had all been set up for us & the db path. :2 cents:

My thoughts exactly. In my 6 years online I have never asked a host to install a script for me.

No.

However, I do have to send in a ticket for them to set up the databases as I don't have a control panel to let me do that. The Mojohost techs just do it all at once.

Edit: I should say that they have done it all at once with stuff like WordPress, etc. I can't speak of other stuff. However, I do know that they are very helpful to help troubleshoot issues, whether they installed it or not.

Buncha 03-20-2010 05:19 PM

For something simple like Wordpress, I'd expect it done within 2-3 hours at most. If it wasn't done in 24 hours, I'd be upset (unless there were special circumstances).

Phatservers and Naked Hosting have always gotten any requests done within an hour. Even in the middle of the night.

VicD 03-20-2010 05:51 PM

Nationalnet installs it for me straight away or i do it myself

Cyber Fucker 03-20-2010 06:06 PM

I install all scripts myself ...but I would say 24 hours max.

btw. if you are looking for a reliable hosting -> webair.com. They can do it for you right away.

it is sad that these people probably consider themselves webmasters, whatever happened to the pioneering ways of the internet, the deep knowledge of what you are working with, now seems like people want everything to be pushbutton and no knowledge or innovation required :2 cents:

Pornwolf 03-21-2010 03:08 AM

Depending of the complexity of the script Webair usually does it for me instantly.

If it's a highly and unusual script that requires some experience with specific platforms to know how to make it run, well, Webair has techs that specialize in different things and they usually get started on those within a day or two.
