CDN hosting.. feedback on it, pricing info?

So I'm considering CDN for my members' area video bandwidth, well really just a passing thought but enough that I wanted to toss up a feeler post.

Help retention? Cost vs benefit?

$tandaman 03-16-2010 08:01 PM

Gleem, hit me up, i can get you an awesome deal with a top3 cdn company.

definitely will see the benefit on your server resources.

Adam_M 03-16-2010 08:02 PM

The cost has dropped a lot on CDN's in the past two years to be very close to the prices of a normal server setup. If you do get quotes the one thing to ask is if the change bandwidth from origin > edge > user or edge > user only that can almost double your bandwidth bill if the charge from the origin. I find CDN help performance a little and offers great redundancy and any chance of downtime.

hmmm, what is the "edge" exactly?

plsureking 03-16-2010 08:08 PM

the pricing is tempting but avoid simplecdn.
they fucked my shit up a few weeks ago.

for what servers cost these days u are better off building your own private cdn. more security and control. 1TB servers are around $200/month in the US or EU. just add more as needed and use a failover dns service like Edge Director to rotate or geo-ip users.

Origin is the many storage center for your content, edge is the location your content is cached and where the users download from.

Alex_Manifest_Men 03-16-2010 08:53 PM

We use Limelight and have been really happy with the service. Before we moved to CDN 4 years ago, we got complaints regularly from our European members..but that doesn't happen anymore.

2 servers one for usa and 1 for europe will do fine for most people unless you have a decent amount of members from asia.

you just mirror the two servers? How's that setup.

nn_sean 03-17-2010 08:02 AM

Gleem,

If you have a moment, feel free to contact me directly. We can discuss and answer any and all questions you may have regarding CDN. I look forward to hearing from you. thanks!

Your own private CDN?! Do you know how much that would cost? Are you planning on opening data centers or buying full setups in 30 locations across the globe?

iwiiiiiiiiii 03-17-2010 08:32 AM

With the price per mbits you can get, no reason to invest on servers for your own CDN...

We go with limelight actually for cdn for around 1gb, and it would cost 40k+ in servers to host our own videos, for the same price per mbits....

sandman! 03-17-2010 08:45 AM

for static content you can use rsync to mirror the 2 servers.

personally i dont use cdn's or do geo mirroring but its not to hard to setup with rsync for static content over a few servers if you wanted to do.

right, but how would the servers know who to serve what to, there's a geo script somewhere involved?

sandman! 03-17-2010 03:35 PM

yes there are geo scripts or even look at your members area script there might be a way to have 2 download links shown to everyone call 1 link usa and 1 link europe and let the user decide there are many different ways to do this.

unless your using a few gigs in bandwith running a few servers is cheaper then a CDN.

We use a few for different purposes, but CDNetworks handles our dynamic ads and we're fairly happy with them.

Hi Gleem - I've just sent you a detailed email regarding the 4 CDN's we have available here at CaveCreek Hosting. I would highly suggest you don't try and "do it yourself" as that will not be cost effective in any way - and you won't get your content in nearly as many locations around the globe. I've asked for some additional information like how you're currently delivering your content (streaming, download, live, etc..) to determine the cost of bandwidth (it's different for different types of file delivery) and which CDN would fit your program and needs best. They each have their strong suits and we'll definately be able to get you setup with one that will benefit your program. And I would be suprised if I couldn't get you CDN bandwidth for less than what you're currently paying for regular bandwidth now.

let me know - thanks!

sandman! 03-17-2010 04:57 PM

since you say its not cost effective to do how much is 200mbs of bandwith on your cdn solution ?

you have the traffic to justify 30 servers? grow as needed. obviously.

Shoot me an email with what type of file delivery you're talking, and how much storage (if applicable) and I'll send you a quote - thanks!

:thumbsup

gleem 03-18-2010 09:38 AM

Well I've been told this via email:

Quote:

Thanks for following up. To be perfectly honest, we generally would never
recommend anyone with your amount of traffic (500gigs of content & 30mbps) use a CDN option, the reason
being, the level 3 cdn network we use bases everything on the amount of hits
you get. So the most active sites on the CDN edge..the network component out
there....are the ones that see benefit...if you don’t have enough traffic,
you basically get bumped out of line and your members see no benefit..which
in our opinion, means you would be paying for nothing at that point. There
maybe some other CDN companies out there with different scenarios setup, but
I would make sure you ask them about all of this.
