Hosting -- 10TB becomes 100TB

So why is bandwidth so expensive with Adult hosting companies?

Dayum 100tb serious bidness

rowan 03-16-2010 04:41 PM

Ok, if I've worked this out correctly 100TB is about 312Mbps average. For $199 including server??!? "As you would expect unmetered bandwidth from 100TB is truly unmetered and unshared, with no limits and no small print." How can they offer this price without seriously overselling their bw?

Most people barely use any :winkwink:

Brujah 03-16-2010 04:46 PM

Overselling isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's all about whether or not the bandwidth is properly managed. They pay for the pipes whether it's used or not don't they?

Nicky 03-16-2010 04:50 PM

That's insanely cheap.

Yep, so that's overselling... if everyone suddenly used 100% of their entitled transfer per month their core router would catch fire. :)

Looking at it another way... if you use even 10% of the transfer you're paying < 2c/gig. If you use 50% it's < 0.4c/gig.

Because the people that patronize these companies in adult simply don't know any better.

TwinCities 03-16-2010 05:33 PM

Make no mistake, 100tb.com is a major host with a major network and support. They have been around a dozen or so years too I believe.

WTF are you smoking? 10TB/100TB is a reseller of another host.

fuzebox 03-16-2010 08:03 PM

In some deals like these, you're getting an older server that can't sustain a high bandwidth site anyway, and they profit by upselling you to a newer or multiple boxes...

Brujah 03-16-2010 08:14 PM

I bet the usual favorite adult hosts buy more bandwidth than they use too, and if you add up all the allotted bandwidth per customer, they oversell. It's a misused word when it comes to bandwidth management.

I bet the usual favorite adult hosts reuse old server hardware too, I know for a fact as I was paying for some very cheap and very old hardware, and getting a very small amount of bandwidth for 7+ years.

I've also used a Softlayer/10TB server for years and they've been great.

ya u gotta upgrade your boxes every year. take advantage of price drops and technology upgrades. most decent hosts will migrate you for free. i usually go one step further and switch hosts too (unless they dont totally suck).

used them for over a year, only reason is switched cause i got a better deal somewhere else.

other than that, they had great support, great speeds, all around great service, they use softlayer bandwidth

Correct.

Most people are OVERPAYING for what they really need because they simply do not understand resource management. Some of this is helped by the out of the box packages offered by hosts with too little disk space, older servers, etc..

Most, not all, could cut their hosting expenses by 30-50% easily.

tiger 03-16-2010 10:18 PM

They look pretty good I was about to try them as well. Anyone want to comment on how good/bad the control panel that they use compared to cpanel?

well if their service is as fast as their site is in europe, then i know where the cheapness comes from. Site has been trying to load whilst i read this topic, during my reply it still tries to load up.

True, slow for me too...

I've seen those prices for unmanaged foreign servers, so the price is nice!

Klen 03-17-2010 05:44 AM

I also used them for one year, had 7 servers there, but i canceled them all because they made a mistake which pissed me off.I wont be returning there, but i might take one server for hosting static content but that wont be so soon since even now i have too much bandwidth available. And btw i already opened thread with same title,
fucking-around-and-business-discussion/957908-10tb-100tb.html , i guess i forgot to add hosting in title.

Has anyone opened a 100TB account? How fast are they at getting you up and running? Have you ever had to use their support?

support is fast usally withint 2-3 mins, took 24hours to get a server with them when they were 10tb, one of the reps posts here i think.

WiredGuy 03-18-2010 12:52 PM

They're a pretty good host in terms of hardware/support/pricing but if you ever get a DMCA watch out. They won't even give you a chance to defend yourself or consider your side of the request. Their only acceptable response to a DMCA is take down the content or they'll shut you down. Even if you own the rights to the content. And even if you get a lawyer to talk some sense into them, they still won't listen...

It's not a rep,it's ceo who have account here. And their support sucks in mosts cases. But on managed plan they might be better.

And that is reason why i left them-someone can send fake report to them or to softlayer, and then they shutdown your server without notification.Imagine what could happen if you are on vacation or long time away.

I moved almost all my servers off them after exactly that. Its so simple to destroy someone's business on their servers by simply faking a DMCA. They'll always side with the complaining party even if you own the rights. If you're comfortable with that, host away. Otherwise, its not worth it.

most people seem to overpay for hosting...I have thought that for years

That's alarming! :(

That's the DMCA / OCILLA law. Example:

While that's true, almost every host has a reasonable human being to look at the work in question. In my case, its so obvious and takes less than 2 seconds to realize its not the copyrighted work in question. I'd rather pay more to avoid the constant disruption to my business from fake DMCA's to begin with.
