Best movies westerns ?

I am re-watching The Magnificent Seven a the moment for an article I am writing about re-makes of foreign language films that actually worked.

Surely, it has to be in the running for one of the best Westerns ever. What others should be on the list of best movie westerns?

escorpio 03-11-2010 04:57 AM

The Wild Bunch
3:10 to Yuma
Unforgiven

True grit, Tombstone, unforgiven and the fistfull of dollars series

fatfoo 03-11-2010 05:00 AM

I saw an old western once that I really liked. It was with Clint Eastwood.

I don't remember what the name of the movie was. They had a shootout in the mountains, rode on horses through the valley, very fun.

But, not as fun as watching a Karen O concert. She's a talented singer. (But, that's unrelated to westerns) Although, Karen O has a music video where she poses with guns, and some audio says that "she's a sadistic criminal." I don't believe she would do it in real life. I can't believe that. Music videos are not real life, are they? I really would like to think that Karen O is not a killer.

I looked up a celebrity who is a killer.

Amy Fisher shot someone (trying to kill the person), but the person was only severely wounded. On May 19, 1992, 17-year-old Fisher had an accomplice drive her to the Buttafuoco home in Massapequa, New York. When Mary Jo Buttafuoco answered the door, Fisher told her that Joey was having an affair with Amy's younger sister, providing a t-shirt advertising Joey's auto body shop for her "proof." When Mary Jo turned away Amy shot her in the head on the front porch and left the property. Fisher was charged with first-degree attempted murder, but pleaded guilty to one count of assault in the first degree, and in December 1992 was sentenced to 5 to 15 years in prison.

I think Unforgiven is very good. I also recently watched The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. It was really good.

While it isn't a movie I think the best Western of all time is Deadwood. It was the series on HBO. It lasted 3 seasons, but there are only a total 36 episodes. It is fantastic and well worth checking out if you haven't already.

The Duck 03-11-2010 05:22 AM

Like kane wrote above Deadwood is the best western series. As far as movies go I like the fistful series.

Sarah_Jayne 03-11-2010 05:37 AM

Fistful of Dollars is next up since it was also a remake.

Django - if you are going to watch it don't read a review as it will spoil the film.

A lot of re-makes of foreign language films don't seem to work as well as the original although i'm sure if you watched them as re-make then original you would be thinking the original was the one lacking.

I watch quite a lot of foreign films as I don't mind having to read subtitles and something really obscure that probably only ends up being watched by about 12 people in the world can often be a very good film that would have just needed decent promotion but i'm really crap at remembering names.

ColetteX 03-11-2010 06:49 AM

btw great movies in here, as django, but nobody mentioned vinnetou?

No you are wrong. Music videos ARE real life.

Everything you see in a music video DID actually happen.

I found it hard to believe myself, but when i did, you could have knocked me over with a feather...

I am a big fan of world cinema and know very well that most do not work. No, most of the times the original is vastly better than the remake and there isn't a comparison at all. I was ranting about just that when somebody set me the task to find five that *did* work :) Luckily, I knew the five and am just re-watching them so they are fresh in my mind.

Caligari 03-11-2010 08:38 AM

not a big western fan, but High Plains Drifter has gotta be my fav cuz of the cross genre action.
Tombstone, Quick and the Dead, the Deadwood series very good as well.
