windows 2008 server ??

Is there a vista32bit emulator for this?

Server has 16gigs of ram and only serving around 10mbps with all static content pics and movies, i'd estimate about 200 max connections at anyone time. It's an i7 cpu and has i believe 4cores running.

If i wanted to use this like a remote pc and do a bit of encoding and a few other programs i'd usually use on my home machine - is it possible to install these on windows 2008 since i think this is 64bit and my home vista is 32?. Is there some emulator for this so all progs running on my vista would work on this machine? I've been told i would run into a lot of issues trying to run some of my apps i use on my home machine.

Would such emulation put large stress on the machine even doing minor things?

I guess doing any encoding at peak times would not be a good idea, but i dont think the cpu is doing much. I'm not sure how to tell how much stress the drives are under, but not much i would think since the biggest files served are like 10-20mb.

Or just leave this alone and get a cheap server with xp or vista 32bit installed on it??

thanks

Bump for longdongsilver.

Virtual PC 2007 (free download link here) would likely do the trick, but I've never run it on Windows server 2008, only on Server 2003 (which is the last server edition that MS lists as supported).

As for the system requirements, technically you far exceed the specifications necessary.

There are search results that list Server 2008 as being able to run Virtual PC, but many of them mention network connection issues.

YMMV.

I completely overlooked both HyperV and VMware. Those are your clear options.

Just installed Virtual PC on my demo Server 2008 R2 and got a virtual network driver error as well as an unsupported OS error. It will run, but it states clearly that "access to the external network and host will be unavailable to all virtual machines using virtual networking".

Why dont you try installing some of your programs and see if they work?
If not just uninstall...

Reading the initial post over I'm chuckling to myself because I actually read it as if LDS wanted to run Vista 32bit in a virtual machine ON his Server 2008 box.

Which is possible through VMware or HyperV, but not exactly what LDS was asking.

(I've been planning/configuring/deploying 2008 servers for the last 17 hours, I have an excuse)

Server 2008 has pretty good compatibility options for programs that can be found in the properties options. In many cases, compatibility is automatic though.
