Yeah they did the same shit to one of my sites about 4-5 years ago, demanded a good deal of money to allow my to transfer it to another registrar. Haven't been a big fan of Godaddy since.

The Duck 03-03-2010 02:52 PM

Any serious site using godaddy is fucked.

quantum-x 03-03-2010 02:54 PM

Damnit, SPAM-AND-ABUSE.COM is registered.
How fucking cool would that have been if it wasn't.

What kind of site was it?Free site, tgp, tube?

CYF 03-03-2010 03:57 PM

All the people on gfy defending godaddy, this is the biggest complaint I have against them :2 cents:

1 report of spam to godaddy, and your domain is locked. Godaddy suspends domains for many, many reasons. Just because you haven't had problems with them, doesn't mean that it will continue forever.

quantum-x 03-03-2010 04:08 PM

They're not the only people that do it.
Namecheap will switch out DNS records w/o warning too

You don't HAVE to do anything wrong. Someone can send a false spam report and you get suspended anyways.

And yea, godaddy :321GFY:321GFY:321GFY:321GFY
I hope some ruski script kiddies bring them down.

Totally serious. I was fairly shocked as well.
I didn't receive any email, any notification, any justification - just had the DNS swapped out.

I was fairly appalled. When I spoke to support, they weren't apologetic. I moved out 500 domains the next day.

Moniker suspended one of my domains without even notifying me. I only noticed because it was included in a list of domains that godaddy had also suspended.

At least Moniker didn't ransom the domain like godaddy, they reinstated it on the condition that I delegate it away from the particular name servers that had been SBL blacklisted. (It was a whitelabel)

When Spamhaus suggests a registrar jump, they ask "how high?" :2 cents:

Thats VERY worrying - I have always considered NC 100% solid. Can you tell me why they did it, or rather what you were "accused" of?

Resellerclub
tucows
fab

For starters any company that doesn't have a history of doing exactly this and Godaddy has a long history of suspending names with no proof then ransoming it back to you for a large fee. I use Moniker or nameheap..

No idea. They said they'd 'received a complaint'.
Wasn't SpamHaus related or anything, there were no complaints there.
All I can think of is that someone got pissed, sent a baloney letter to NC, and boom! they just swapped it out

:(:helpme:Oh crap:mad: is all I can say

mpahlca 03-03-2010 07:44 PM

All registers no matter what they tell you are subject to ICANN and the FTC so a spam complaint would be brought to godaddy not by some random person it would have been brought by the FTC or ICANN after a dispute process. but hey what the fuck do i know.

Im actually surprised to hear that about Moniker, half the biggest spammers on the planet keep their names safe with Monte.

really shitty.... Godaddy is the only one i hear horror stories about

What is sad, is that you actually believe that. Any registrar will shut you down under the right circumstances, but they don't just do it on a whim. You can be sure they have documentation to back every move.

One spam report from an anonymous person did not cause this, I am pretty sure about that. :2 cents:

Bullshit? Here's the letter they send out after a spam complaint:

Quote:

Dear ********,

If you are not able to give us the opt in information we have requested this places you in violation of your registration agreement and Go Daddy's anti-spam policy.More information on Go Daddy's Anti-Spam policy can be found at https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/no_spam.asp Go Daddy has a strict anti-spam policy, as the registrant of ****.COM you are ultimately responsible for the use of your domain name, any email mail advertisement that is driving traffic to, or creating revenue for, your website or domain name is your responsibility.

This also applies to the actions of any party generating this traffic or revenue on your behalf. This includes, but is not limited to, 3rd party marketers, business partners, mailing list providers and affiliates. Please keep in mind that it is not our intention to cause anyone's business to suffer and we do appreciate you cooperating with us on this matter. Because of your cooperation and willingness to resolve this issue thus far, your services have not been interrupted, but this situation remains unresolved. We present to you the following solution to resolve this issue:First, reply to ******************** with a statement that you (or your employees, affiliates, 3rd party marketers, etc.) will no longer send messages to individuals that did not ask to receive information specifically from your domain name.Second, include in this statement authorization for GoDaddy.com to charge a $199 non-refundable administration fee to the credit card on file for your account (you may want to log into your Go Daddy account and confirm that the card on file is valid and has not expired).

Go Daddy believes this solution to be a fair one that will ensure that you will correct the problem on your end, and prevent any future violations of Go Daddy's Anti-Spam policy. Additionally your services are not interrupted and your customers and affiliates are not inconvenienced. If you reply with this statement and agree to pay this fee, Go Daddy will accept this, in good faith, as proof of your commitment to correct this problem. If not, your domain name may be immediately redirected and your service suspended. Please be aware that Go Daddy will continue to monitor this situation.

If in the future it is determined that this problem persists, your domain name may be immediately redirected. We do realize additional complaints resulting from this mailing may come in and we will of course consider this, and contact you before taking any action.Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely, Spam and Abuse Department – GoDaddy.com
They charge $199 to get your domain back after a spam complaint.

How about this?

Quote:

I had one of my domain names held hostage by them about 5 months ago. They told me they had received a complaint about spam for my domain and so I was required to pay $199USD. I told them to fuck off and wanted to transfer the domain to netsol, but godaddy REFUSED to allow me to transfer without first paying them the $200. I took me more than a month of yelling at their 'managers' on the phone who didn't give a shit about ICANN regulations before they allowed the transfer
How about Godaddy suspends a domain for ONE COMPLAINT from Myspace over 1 EMAIL that was part of a mailing list archive and not sent from the suspended domain? The owner of that domain didn't do anything wrong and his domain was suspended.

And what about ICANN taking action on Godaddy's 60 day prohibition of transfers which is against ICANN rules?

Godaddy is not to be trusted :2 cents:

no surprise, most people turned black long time ago to survive in this biz...

teh ghey 03-04-2010 01:11 AM

why dont they just pay the 199 to get their site back? then switch to another registrar?

SomeCreep 03-04-2010 01:12 AM

I don't know why Godaddy feels obligated to police spam. That is certainly not the place of a registrar. It is the responsibility of the web host and ISP to police spamming.
