Hurt Locker the movie, overrated or not?

I just watched it last night - pretty good movie, but why all the hype!?

For it to be placed in the same league as Avatar is just stupid.

extremely overrated

I have seen it compared to full metal jacket as well as apocalypse now.

hurt locker is good but far from a classic.

SGS 03-03-2010 01:33 PM

Both are overrated but it was the him and her hype they used to sell them both in difficult times.

awxm 03-03-2010 01:34 PM

Good movie but i can't see myself wanting to watch it again or pick up the blu-ray.

magpan 03-03-2010 01:36 PM

I spent 2003-2007 in Iraq --- it is fucking movie, that is it. I lost 29 friends in 4 years there and I currently have family in combat in A-stan. Yeah, no shit.

Scott McD 03-03-2010 01:37 PM

A lot of "average" movies get hyped up to fuck nawadays.

Usually ends up putting me off altogether...

in terms of eye candy, it's the most sensational shit ever.

Truthfully, I'm indifferent. Ref Scott McD: It was just over-hyped for me, that's what killed it.

justinsain 03-03-2010 02:14 PM

I watched it on DVD and thought it was ok but not worth the hype. What turned me off was how the main character was always going against protocol. Didn't seem realistic for someone to be in that position and get away with acting like that.

I liked " The Kingdom " with Jamie Foxx much better.

seeric 03-03-2010 02:17 PM

awesome. watched it twice. great movie.

Yeah I dont pay much attention to hype (or at least try not to) so when I saw it I thought it was visually appealing. The story was meh...But I dont think it was a POS

JFK 03-03-2010 02:29 PM

saw the movie in flight twice, it was OK, not sure if its worth the hype. As far as movies go its not your usual fare, which is good:thumbsup

Actually, I agree. Maybe I should pay less attention to the overwhelming marketing and pre-screening reviews that come out? :upsidedow

That said, EOD are a bunch of heroes and I probably owe my life to them (especially to the Marine crews in Anbar). The movie is good accolades and credit to an elite group of Soldiers with some serious balls --- even if it was 'movietized' (more than) a bit (yeah, that was my own word for this post). :)

CarlosTheGaucho 03-03-2010 03:35 PM

Haven't seen it yet.

My fav post WW II war movie is probably

Warriors (1999)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119873/

Next to the classics like Apocalypse Now, The Platoon, Born on the 4th July or Full Metal Jacket

Actually my most favorite movie dealing with Vietnam is

"Jacknife" (1989)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097607/

With Jack Nicholson, Ed Harris and Kathy Baker, more a melodrama than a war movie though.

OY 03-03-2010 04:17 PM

I watched The Hurt Locker before I watched Avatar - I enjoyed both just as much, just with a different take on it...

I think it is a tossup.

captain.g 03-03-2010 06:37 PM

I watched it the other night, knew nothing of the hype, I think I would have rather watched 2 hours of family guy reruns. I was not impressed at all. And to compare it to FMJ or Apocalypse Now is is about as bad as saying Natty light is as good as Widmers Broken Halo!

Gambrinus 03-03-2010 06:43 PM

So bad I couldnt even finish it.

Deej 03-03-2010 07:17 PM

hurt locker is good...

I had no clue that they were both being compared to each other...

Avatar is the overrated one...

Theyre both totally different movies, not to even be compared...

V_RocKs 03-03-2010 08:17 PM

My top movies...

Inglourious Basterds
The Hangover
The Blind Side
Julie & Julia
District 9
(500) Days of Summer

Rated based on how likely I am, and have actually been, telling others to watch them...

Notice the 2 movies not in the list because I really didn't see them as being worthy of most peoples time.

fatfoo 03-03-2010 11:36 PM

Avatar was #1 at the Box Office, wasn't it? What a success. I've never even heard of Hurt Locker.

BIGTYMER 03-03-2010 11:39 PM

Just like Moon. People made it sounds like it was so fucking great. It was a good movie but nothing amazing.

NETbilling 03-04-2010 12:00 AM

I thought is was ok.... Shutter Island was not that great either

DefaultMan 03-04-2010 12:14 AM

I really enjoyed Hurt Locker but I don't think it's worth "best picture". It did make me want to watch Black Hawk Down though. Now that was a great fucking movie.

ahoy 03-04-2010 12:20 AM

Didn't even know it was being hyped. Watched it on DVD months ago never hearing of the movie before. Was not really impressed at all, kind of a bore.

Not sure about District 9....

Ross 03-04-2010 03:43 AM

Thought it was a good movie, although as someone mentioned, if that was real life, the Soldier wouldn't get away with going against protocol like that once, never mind a few times. The ending was also a bit weird as well, overall tho worth watching.

d9 is actually quite exciting, in terms of advancing SF - there hasn't / hadn't been much on the SF front for a while, then we got D9, Pandorum, Star Trek - oh my!

smutnut 03-04-2010 04:56 AM

First off, the Oscars are nothing more than a Beauty Pageant. Rarely does anything of substance every actually win and it's never the directors best movie. Just look what Martin Scorsese created before finally winning his Oscar for that comic book Jack Nicholson Contraption.

That being said, anyone who gives Avatar anything but a nod for anything besides 3d effects knows nothing about movies whatsoever. What about that movie was superior to anything except the 3d and the box office sales? the script? the acting? the direction? Even though I enjoyed the movie, it was probably in the bottom tier of Cameron's work.

Ever since they gave it to Pulp Fiction for screenplay because they ignored Reservoir Dogs and the fans loved it, the Oscars have been nothing but industry politics and a way for them to pay back their guilt for ignoring people so they don't burn bridges.

I agree on every single point up until paragraph 3 ...

pulp fiction is far better than reservoir dogs... it really is nothing special. Besides the famous mr pink scene about tipping.... there is not really any substance to THat movie at all. and to say its a shame that quentin didnt win one movie yet he won another is kind of retarded in its own.

so... cool words up until the latter 2nd 1/3...

I thought the same. Too many overhyped movies over the past year or two

Well, I'm not a huge Tarantino fan for anything he's filmed, but I do think Tony Scott turned his script True Romance into one of the greatest movies of all time. Now that was an Oscar snub as well as the biggest marketing sabotage or at least incompetence that I've ever seen. I'd put a laughing smilie here but it will make people think I'm being sarcastic or joking.
