Crazy new see-thru car tires/rims that bend - this will be the new bling <<< PICS >>>

New Michelin Tires... Absolutely SCARY looking... Look for 'em in August.

Michelin TWEEL, a non-pneumatic mobility concept, will increase productivity because it is maintenance-free, puncture-proof, easy to mount and dismount and provides a longer service life than radial tires.

>> SEE THROUGH TIRES
The next generation of tires.
They had a pair at the Philadelphia car show.

Wow, that's cool.

BAKO 03-02-2010 01:05 PM

that looks bad ass

DWB 03-02-2010 01:37 PM

That's pretty sweet.

That will never see the light of day if the large inter-tube companies have powerful lobbyist. ;-)

very interesting, I wonder what the down side is? also wonder what they will cost since the don't need replacing often.

dyna mo 03-02-2010 01:50 PM

DAMN, every time i see a thread like this i always hope it's not the same ole tires/wheels from 1996.

but it always is.

:thumbsup

Ugly as all hell IMO, but way cool.

I'll take ugly over paying $800+ to replace a rim and tire anyday

Really cool tires ..

chaze 03-02-2010 01:58 PM

Shit that might replace the current tire, I mean no more flats and replaceable tread.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tweel

They've been in development for several years now.

Here's the major drawbacks:

Quote:

The Tweel does have several flaws, however, the worst being vibration. Above 50 miles per hour (80 km/h), the Tweel vibrates considerably. That in itself is a big problem, but it also causes two other things: noise and heat. A fast moving Tweel is unpleasantly loud.[2] Also, long-distance driving at high speeds generates more heat than Michelin engineers would like, which might lead to premature failure.

ugly as fuck :2 cents:

stickyfingerz 03-02-2010 02:08 PM

These have been around quite some time now, not sure why they haven't caught on yet.

This one is slightly different, and I think probably better.

The one thing I wonder is how these wheels / tires will hold up in conditions. Slush, mud ice etc. Seems like they would be easy to have their balance thrown off.

CunningStunt 03-02-2010 02:16 PM

I can't see that passing safety laws, kids getting their fingers and hands stuck in them etc.

Make the car look ugly imho.

Neat concept though.

Adam X 03-02-2010 02:23 PM

I personally like the tires I have now...
they're not big old-school tube style tires..
no heat or vibration issues at high speed.. check..
and they run-flat if needed for quite a distance.. why go anywhere else?

OK if this tire is supposed to be sooooo great. why does he not have a car with it on FLYING around a track showing the " Greatness "

Scott McD 03-02-2010 02:27 PM

Nice idea, but ultimately Fail though!

its not designed for uber performance, he mentioned india/etc in his video. He's going after low costing economical situations where they can provide cheap/abundance wheels.

Common problem i still see is the tread ware.

Roby 03-02-2010 03:43 PM

looks cool

fatfoo 03-02-2010 03:44 PM

That's interesting. So, these tires can drive over curbs and things like that.

Same here. A couple pictures make it look like if you hit a pothole too hard you can really fuck the rim, moreso than normal tires. But I am guess they've thought of that.

themadwriter 03-02-2010 05:07 PM

looks like some really cool shit!

Spunky 03-02-2010 05:58 PM

I dunno about them, they don't look all that stable to me

shimmy2 03-02-2010 07:55 PM

Won't work for racing applications. All my r-compond stickies have firm huge sidewalls... And I run kuhmov700s a cheap version of hoosiers. It's best left for show cars... Like those tires with the colored stripes that are played out
