You Americans And Your Sports !!!!!!

Right, being from the Uk (Scotland) we have 1 sport, and 1 sport only. Well, only 1 than anyone gives a shit about. Football (soccer). Do you follow the 3 or 4 main sports in America, and what would you say is the daddy sport of them all ?

Just wondering before i make my 1st trip to the states on January... I like watching my American sports.

Oh, and not sure if this is a dumb question but does a Ney York Jets fan HAVE to follow either NY Rangers or Islanders or does it not matter ??? Same question with regards to baseball and basketball also ?

Bet you wish you didn't click this thread...........

The daddy of all American sports is prolly baseball. You'll probably find that most people cheer for the home teams...no matter what the sport.

:2 cents:

Sarah_Jayne 12-23-2002 11:20 AM

Yeah most people support their home teams. Not like the Uk where every other person supports Man U (except for us Charlton fans).

Phillies fan here..no matter how much they stink.

Fletch XXX 12-23-2002 11:21 AM

Im american, and i dont watch sports at all.

Scott McD 12-23-2002 11:25 AM

Yeah, i don't know if i worded it right but i mean if say a Jets fan was watching an Ice Hockey match between NY Rangers and The Islanders, which team should he be supporting ?

Or do those kind of rules not apply in Amerca ???

No sports huh?! No competitive nature or just not into the whole sports thing.

Scott McD,

Daddy of all US sports is most likely baseball, but not the most popular by any means. The NFL and NASCAR are the most watched on TV and the largest for advertising dollars (the NBA is also very popular as far as viewer ratings go).

I'm a JETS fan and not at all interested in either Islanders or Rangers (you forgot about the other hockey team in Buffalo :-))

Shooter 12-23-2002 11:37 AM

I'd say the popularity is like this right now:

1. Football
2. Basketball
3. Baseball
4. Hockey

Fletch XXX 12-23-2002 11:41 AM

Not into sports.

Are you guys into Vintage Analog Synthesizers and Sound Recording? My friends are all in the music business and thats what I do. I was never into sports. I was good at them, in fact. I went to a mostly black school in New Orleans growing up, and I learned to shoot ball quite well for a whiteboy hahaha

I am into different things. Thats all.

While you like to watch tv games, I like to go to the studio and do what I like best.

Music...

No competitive nature?

Blah, yeah youre real competitive sitting watching others do it.

I wasn't blasting you Fletch XXX, just asking is all. Yeah, I love watching sports AND playing. I still compete when I can (mountain biking in Colorado last year and a few different competitions in Nevada and Utah this coming year).

Fletch XXX 12-23-2002 11:49 AM

It's all good.

Im just fucking with ya.

I used to pick fights with the frat boy athletes all the time anyway. I was the rocker boy that your girlfriend sat next to in High School.

Even though she loved her popular highschool running back letterman jacket boyfriend, she still thought I was cuter because I had long hair and rocked. \m/

Its an old game between jocks and guys like me.

:winkwink:

I hear you on that one, lol. If I had any musical talents at all, I would trade in the bike for a guitar and try to win over some hotties on the beach in Malibu this coming week:thumbsup

Hockey is the supreme sport of the universe. NY Rangers are the team to watch (if you like watching a team lose frequently) But no matter what the team, I could watch any game at anytime... there are not too many other sports that I can say that about.

Muff 12-23-2002 12:14 PM

Watching baseball is like watching paint dry!

Now I can agree with that.

The Staples center is just a short ways away from my apt.

I can hop on the Metro and be there in 18 mins.

We used to go to Kings games and have a blast.

9$ heinekens.

Back in NOLA I used to hit Saints games at the Superdome too, its fun, but as I said, I just cant follow it. But the events are cool.

hahaha

I wouldn't say that about baseball... more like golf or tennis... baseball has a huge amount of strategy involved so it is more like a game of chess. Not saying that watching baseball can't be boring but the more you know about the game the more fun it is to watch.

Gasper 12-23-2002 12:19 PM

Skijumping isn't that bad also :thumbsup

Scott McD 12-23-2002 12:26 PM

So what brings America to a standstill ? Does everyone watch the Superbowl even when their own team aren't featured ?

Or maybe even Wrestlemania !!!!!

:)

MattB 12-23-2002 12:27 PM

Not much is better than watching pro football....the Oakland Football Raiders to be exact. What other team has a guy that uses his wifes steroids and gets in trouble for distributing them, and has a fat, drunk, 1st round draft pick, polish kicker who makes every game worth watching? I cant see why anyone would watch any other games when they can watch Seabass put down his beer and hot dog, ooze onto the field, take one exhausting step, and kick a 60 yard field goal? That guy is arguably the best athlete in any sport!!!

i'm a sports freak, getting less so as i get older, but still watch a ton of sports and listen to sportsradio while i work.

The ranking somebody gave out is right in modern America.

The SuperBowl is by far the biggest single sporting event in America, it is now basically a national holiday.

The NFL, professional football is the KING, not even close for second place. After that it gets debatable. Baseball was America's pastime, until the 1960's, Baseball, boxing and horse racing and college football ruled. TV made the NFL.

Baseball is not second I don't think, baseball is a dying sport, the ratings among young people are horrible. The NBA is probably even or sightly ahead of baseball, especially with under 30's and kids.

College basketball and football are HUGE in America. The NCAA Mens Basketball tournament is bigger than the World Series.

I think you'd have to put 'college sports' ahead of baseball and the NBA.

Hockey is a regional sport and it always will be. In some big cities in the Northeast and MidWest, like Detroit, St Louis, Philly, the NHL is equal with the NBA or better. Also very popular in some other spots like San Jose and Colorado. Hockey is definitely a 'niche' sport.

Wrestling of the professional showbiz kind is still very popular, though i think it's waned in recent years, the history of pro wrestling is boom times then a long slump then it booms again .....

Here are my popularity rankings

NFL Football
NCAA (football and basketball)
NASCAR and other motor sports (this is very regional but where its big it's HUGE)
NBA
Major League Baseball (tie)
NHL Hockey
Golf
Boxing

might be missing some........ tennis has fallen off the map ....... soccer will never catch on as a viewership sport though it's growing a bit with better American international mens and womens teams

not including wrestling since it admits it's not really a sport

Really ???

Shit..... So football wins it then :glugglug

Mutt 12-23-2002 03:03 PM

yup and by a large margin. Football is America's number one sport.

go to this website and listen to why

http://www.opranoplus.com/pickem

it's the most violent sport ever invented, the damage to a body during an NFL career is insane, the big boys who play on the line walk away old men at 40, cripples. that's not even including the damage from steroids.

I love the way the sound crew are allowed to record all the shit from the touchline, to the dressing room, and on-field stuff also. Over here in a recent game (soccer) they had the first ever camera and sound guys in the tunnel at half-time. Because they caught someone pushing another player, it was in the papers for about a week and now it's been banned already.....

Assholes..... :feels-hot

I had 1300$ seats at the Superbowl in new Orleans a few years back. 6th row. I dont even remember who played! hahaha

My friends dad (coder) had 6 tickets, we sold 2 and 4 of us went. We sold the 2 tickets outside the door for 1300 each.

The half time show was James brown, I remember that day well.

What a fucking blast.

Rolling Rocks at the Superdome, drunk as hell.

\m/

Scott McD 12-23-2002 04:13 PM

So to just go to a Superbowl, even if your team isn't in it, is still a major thing ?

Don't get me wrong, I always watch it over here with no real interest in who's playing at all and would love to attend one at some point (never gonna happen though) but could never imagine going to an over event here, when my Bhoys aren't playing.....

Hmmm,

Question : what have you done at a game ???

Answer : (sex seems to be around the 9% mark for most areas)

I was a bit sceptical of this but remeber seeing the clip of the guy and girl screwing at the baseball game.....
