Is it just me or do routers break once every year?
 

No matter what router I have had they all break after 10-14 months.....from $150 routers to $40....
just got a new one today decided not to spend much since they all decide they are tired some day and just die or go crazy.

Something may be wrong.

What kind of surge/line conditioning protection did you have on those routers? And/or what was plugged into them?

Also take into consideration that some devices are more hardy than others when it comes to power anomalies and pass on power shorts and fluctuations to less hardy components.

hummm i've had a wrt54g linksys for 5+ years if not longer with no issues....

My wrt54g linksys turned into a children's toy the other day during a storm, even though it was plugged into a surge protector.

Fucking crazy. I've heard they are real dogs at the best of times. I'd only had it 5 months.

If it's lots of different routers and you're still having that issue, the only thing I can think of is dirty power. Anything else failing? Have you had the electrics in your place checked out?

The one I have has been on for a constant 4 years now without breaking.

Edit, fuck I'm lying. I just remembered I bought a new 1gig one last year :P But the one before had been on for ~3 years in that case.

Do the USB Adapters break as easy as well?

I thought it was only me. about once a year yep...

I also thought that I was the only one. I go through one a year also, both at this house and my previous house.

that's why i don't trust usb adapters much

So you have to replace the router + usb adapters every so often?

I may stick with hub + cables....:(

My last one was a netgear and it lasted 5-6 years but recently i would get all red X's in statsremote but the internet would work again after statsremote was finished,then red X's again during a stats update and internet down. If i power cycled it,it would last about a week before it would break again.

dirty power might be a problem....current building im living in got some electrical problems so it might be it... i do have a surge protector.

Surge protectors only guard against significant power spikes.

What you might want to get is a UPS w/ a built-in line conditioner. Most devices can handle minor power fluctuations, but a line conditioner keeps voltage in a safe range around the standard 110V.

the newer linksys routers are crap. The quality has gone down since the old days of the wrt54g.
I just got a dualband netgear wndr3700 and its been fantastic.

Don't tell me about routers. I have the WORST luck ever with the fucking things! :mad:

My router is almost 2 years old. One before that was 3 years old when it was replaced (and it still works).

I had an older linksys last me at least half a dozen years until VERY close lightning strike(could hear frying sound in the air!) took it out along with the cable modem, tv, telephone.. On the second one now.. knock on wood.

reviews were fine with linksys router....checking router reviews you obviously see some people live the router and have no problems whatsoever while others hate them...there's no one router that everyone loves and doesn't have bad reviews

APC's are my brand of choice, although Tripp-lite is also solid.

Those or anything rated above those would be appropriate.

I have that Linyxs one and its been pretty good for me over a year

Update the firmware.

I was about to get rid of my Belkin for dropping computers on my network for the past 2 months. I updated to latest firmware and problem is solved.

Good to know, thats the exact problem I am having with my new Belkin.

The wired computers work fine but my laptop keeps losing signal.

I used to have router problems like that years ago...went through many.

One thing that ALWAYS fucked up for me was the Comcast internet modems.

Now I have FiOS with the built-in router ... I've never had downtime nor any problems.

Thats the best router ever made - I have 3 running tomato. And the worst router brand, buy it only if you want to buy a new later, is Dlink.

That's weird. I've had my Linksys for probably 3 years now without any hiccups.

I've never had a Linksys router die. Probably switched about 3 times in 10 years, but never one to die.

I was going through one, maybe two, a year with Netgear, switched to Linksys, a very cheap models and I have had it now for 4-5 yrs.

The newer black Linksys ones with the Cisco logo on them are complete crap I have done three repairs in the last two months where they had to be replaced and they were only a few months old.

I have a new cisco / linksys. The last linksys one lasted 3 years, was still working fine although I think I really needed to update the firmware as it was needing rebooting more often. I couldn't be bothered though so I bought new N one.

i got something similar today...it's called an "electric stabilizer" around here or whatever...seems like it helps :thumbsup thanks gfy

I've had SMC, D-Link break within 6 months. THe only one that survives? Linksys WRT54GL. We've had three and set friends up with them at every opportunity. Haven't had one die yet. Buy them off Craigslist before they're all gone :)

That's the one I have. Best one I've bought yet.

Wirless ones yes about that often. Wired ones, almost never.

My D-Link wireless bridge has absolutely rocked though, but they're $200.

Glad to know I am not the only one who constantly has routers die on him.

I'd say they die between 6 months and a year, on average....My last one I used for maybe a month before I could no longer use wireless.

Has anyone had success with the new 802.11n standard?

I only used wired for my 5 systems because the old b/g standard would drop data constantly. I've been thinking of getting one of those new routers and trying wireless again.

I've had a netgear for a couple years now with no issues.
