Yes, you can really do that. If I remember right, the old ones used an infrared controller, and the new ones are wireless.

if you can find one of the old road signs (these are from the 90's and rarely used because of this) its just a simple code on the inside to program characters... they even have the directions taped to the inside of the lid. the hardest part is picking the lock to get in.

the newer ones require passwords to access the software and even many you can not change right there on the spot, they are done remotely now... probably just for this reason

They've been messed with by me, but the signs tend to be the older ones that bossku69 refers to. Zombies Ahead was done in SoFla... very funny to see :) The folks that did it even changed the lock on the box so DoT couldn't switch it back immediately.
