MacBook Pro w/ Core i5/i7
 

Does anyone have any idea when they're releasing the '6' series? I'm due for a new one but I'm in 'watch and shoot' mode at the moment as I've read that the new top-end model is 'leaps and bounds' ahead of the old models.

That said, I am, primarily, a PC user. But, I've had a Mac around the house constantly since the 80s, I know their OS and apps inside and out. But, I was thinking of doing a new MacBook Pro with Windows 7, without a partition (no need for me to have both OS' on one unit). Anyone having issues with this? Or, should I just stay with Mac OS and get the few PC apps that I like in the Mac version?

I appreciate thoughts and comments. I would stick with a Sony VAIO Z but I've been through 2 full keyboards in a year, and about to replace it again, and it seems that this unit is certainly not designed for a '20 hours per day,' rigorous level of use. :1orglaugh

I'm more productive in OSX so I need a Mac laptop. I probably wouldn't buy one to run Windows on.

magpan, get yourself a Razor Lycosa if you want a decent keyboard - just make sure you clean it often. Or if you're a Dvorak user I can suggest a few brands.

apple is so funny. as a pc user I've been on i7 for some time... I have 3 actually, 2, i7 975 and one i7 950 and yet mac pretends they have just created the MOST FUCKING AMAZING PROCESSOR!!!!! seriously get a sager notebook and you will be very very impressed and very very happy... I should have went with sager 10 years ago and I'll stay with them for sure... just google sager...

I use an HP wireless usb keyboard... works great $30...

Personally, I would not spend the money on the Mac ...instead I would get one of these if I was in the market for a Laptop with Quad-Core

I would upgrade to a 7200 RPM drive, but you have to consider the fact that it will decrease your battery life - unless you can upgrade the battery too.

...I would dual-boot with 7 as primary and OSX secondary, best of both worlds. OSX and Windows on a nice machine!

lol - the whole point of this post has been lost. :) Ok --- to be more specific:

1. I do NOT use external keyboards. I use my laptop keyboard, directly. Why? Because I like the small ass keyboard and it enables me type 120+ words per minute (hence why I can post the shit out of GFY).

2. I am not a huge fucking Mac fan and I think that the iPad was one of the most useless tools ever launched. I also hate iPhones. That said, I DO like the construction of the MacBook Pro. It is durable YET aesthetically pleasing. So, I'm not really looking for anything else, most notably 'gaming PCs,' or anything that looks like an 'off the shelf' Dell. But, I do appreciate your thoughts on what is good and what isn't, if you insist on posting in this thread. I look at everything. Really.

3. I don't think Mac was claiming anything, about any processor. And, considering that it is in an Intel processor, I don't think that they will be anytime soon. That said, Mac IS a bit 'behind the times' at the moment and their launch of the new Pro will bring them back in line with the rest of the industry.

So, in short, let's get back to the original intent of this post: the upcoming MacBook Pro Core i5/i7, how it relates to what I want to do with, it and when it might be released. And, I am especially interested in hearing from Mac + Windows users, who have experience with the configuration that I mentioned (I know that there are a couple of you on here). :)

i used to hate mac... and now im a big fan.. i'll be grabbing the second gen itablets (the first gen will suck hard) and the new mbp when they're out.

Sounds about right. I think my first clue that the first gen of iPad was going to be shit was the lack of a webcam (and, Mac's big 'knee jerk' right after, with them saying that they would (possibly) include one). Actually, I'm a bit surprised that they forgot that and someone should have been getting fired after Jobs' presentation and public reaction. Anyways, long story short, gen 1 Mac stuff is usually shit. It is always better to wait. :thumbsup

Not sure when it's coming out but I'm running Windows on a MacBookPro (albiet with a partition) and it works well. That said, I'd go with your other idea of sticking with Mac OS and using the few PC apps that you like in the Mac version. If it's just a few, Fusion or Parallels are fast enough for low-resource PC apps if there is no Mac version.

I agree. My two MBPs are OS X only, but I have an iMac that runs OS X and Win 7. If you stick with OS X, you'll soon find alternatives to the Win apps you still want to keep and be free of MS forever. ( www.macupdate.com) I only have 2 apps still on Windows that I want to keep, but I use them less & less all the time. Haven't used either one now in months. Win 7 is only around here for testing at this point. Nothing else.

Throw up a partition and bootcamp Win. I would bootcamp on a separate partition though. You're not losing anything by having both, and it's nice to be able to switch between them if you decide you need to, rather than "want" to and be stuck with one or the other. Give it some time and your decision on which you prefer will work itself out naturally.

Some people like Fusion or Parallels, but personally I hate the virtual environment. Too slow. I run Win 7 in its natural state. The 5 seconds it takes to reboot into it is not a big deal for me, and takes no longer than firing up Fusion anyway.

Yeah. I think your point is that although you use Windows mainly, you prefer Apple's hardware. And who wouldn't?

If cutting the cord from Windows is hard, you should run both operating systems on the machine, which is what I do. Here's the approach you should take:

If the apps you still need to run on the Windows side are fairly minor users of resources, just stay in OSX and emulate with Fusion, Parallels or Crossover, running on top of Mac OS X. It's a slightly slower way to run Windows, but with non-resource hog apps, who cares? You won't notice. I like the Windows Pinball game (lol). I also like the Windows only Star Alliance timetable. These are apps I can run with Windows emulation.

If however, the apps you need to run are intensive and you can only use them on the Windows side, you need to run the Windows OS natively in order to achiever peak performance with those apps. If run Windows as a partition with Bootcamp, you will.

I do Bootcamp for one reason only: I do video on Vegas. I just can't get the hang of the Mac way of doing video (maybe someday). Although the other resource-intensive apps many of us use on Windows, such as Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Excel, etc., can be done with Mac versions, and more pleasantly so.

Although Mac products has a reputation for being more expensive, and usually deservedly so, The MacBook Pro runs Windows and Windows apps as fast as or faster than any other laptop maker would for the same price. When you're truly comparing apples to apples, a Dell or HP or some other PC laptop that can handle a true workhouse editing and rendering routine, would be every bit as expensive as a MacBook Pro--often more expensive.

Windows is soooo 1995. And get used to iPad, very soon, you will see it everywhere.
