vrooooooom! I got my car!
1999 3000GT SL
5 speed Black exterior, tan interior My dad is teaching me manual. The only thing I am having some trobule with is going from not moving to moving (gear 1). http://eru.cx:2050/3000gt/IMG_0165.JPG http://eru.cx:2050/3000gt/IMG_0166.JPG http://eru.cx:2050/3000gt/IMG_0167.JPG http://eru.cx:2050/3000gt/IMG_0168.JPG |
Nice car man. You just hold down the clutch, shift, then slowly push on the gas while you let go of the clutch, when you feel it "catching", let go of the clutch completely and FLOOR THAT BITCH.
|
not bad.
congrats :thumbsup |
looks good :winkwink:

I stalled the car a few times so far. The people behind me were kind of pissed off. I also am riding the clutch too much. I gotta get rid of that habit. |

it's all very easy foot down on clutch slip into gear foot down hard on the accelerator hand off hand brake foot off clutch ...... BOOMPH! got rice bitch? but if you stall it, don't panic or you'll look like a dick. :glugglug |
go to an empty parking lot one day and practice using the clutch. once you get a feal for it, it'll be just like walking, you won't even have to think about it.
sweet lookin car |
And when you get the hang of it you'll probably never wish to drive an automatic again (except in traffic jams :))
|
i learned to drive in a nissan, manual
it was awful the worst thing was stalling it it started chugging, then spluttering it didn't just give up like some cars... it was die hard it felt like a truck had just hit if any learner was to stall that fucking nissan more than three times per day, the end result would be a serious dose of whiplash thankfully i got the hang of it, and i never drove a nissan again :thumbsup |

What do you guys think about neutral shifting? ie, if I am going down a hill, I switch into neutral and use brake to slow down.
|
I always just pushed the clutch in down a hill, much easier than shifting gears and stuff :)
|
You all sound like woman drivers :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

As soon as the clutch is down you rev that shit up to redline! Then let off the clutch... burn some rubber... hehehe... |
Hehe, I learned to drive stick when I bought a car with it and I had to get it home from the lot :winkwink: For 2 months I took the 2nd exit up from where I lived because it was a flat exit instead of a hill :1orglaugh
I have autos in my cars now, but I LOVE driving manuals - you're actually DRIVING a car with a stick shift! Good luck - it's a pretty car - but the Mom in me says "Be CAREFUL!" :) |
broken images.

You should try and learn on a brand new Harley like me. You have to learn to ride, and try not to fuck up the bike. I probably should have bought something cheap to learn on first.
Im terrified, I have a terrible time with traffic. its tuff to go 3mph and slow then quick go again. Its pretty funny to see a 300 pound guy running with his feet on the ground with a Harley. :1orglaugh |

Do a google search... At first don't worry too much about the clutch -- it's better not to stall the car... you won't stall as long as you keep your RPM's high so it's ok to be driving around at high rpm's when you're just learning it won't harm the car... Once you get past the basics, practice hills -- I found a service ramp at a loading dock -- at night these are perfect and can be very steep -- you need that practice so you don't hit somebody from behind at a stoplight. Once I was at a light on a very steep hill and I had to wave the traffic around me because I was still having problems stalling... The trick to steep hills is of course stay in first gear, rev the shit high and grind the clutch good -- that's always the safest bet -- don't bother with the whole emergency brake thing on hills that is for fags and will just be more nonsense to break your concentration... If you're in slow moving traffic stop and go traffic up say a bridge (very common in NYC) -- you're pretty much going to be riding the clutch -- it's good practice anyway so when you are in the situation you don't freak out. Also remember if you parked or moving slow into fast traffic on a steep road... getting up to speed into fast traffic (like in LA somewhere) -- always remember to use a lower gear than you think you need -- you may need the extra torque when you least expect it to pass, etc... I almost got in an accident like this. Practice spinning your tires out of reverse into 1st so you can always make a quick getaway :) Practice changing gears without changing your speed... You can do this just while driving down the road in traffic -- shift from 2nd, 3rd, all the way through and back down without jerking the car too much, skip 1 gear, skip 2, skip back, etc. It's fun -- this will teach you to feel your engine so you can know intuitively how much to rev the engine for each gear given your current speed... This will allow you to pass people like a maniac. After you have hills mastered, practice your downshift -- try to use your brakes as little as possible -- on my car it's tricky to downshift into first... This will give you a really good intuitive feel of your car so you have a sort of wierd second nature when shifting all kind of crazy turns... Think about it -- if you are using your brakes to slow down into a turn -- that's kinda gay -- if you are using a lower gear to slow down for a turn -- now you have all this badass torque to launch out of the turn with :) I'd say last -- practice getting your RPM's measured so you barely need the clutch to change gears... This will save wear on your car... and also some chicks will bitch if you are jerking the car around all the time... but driving your stick like a fucking maniac will sometimes get you road head... The more whiplash the better :thumbsup |
Nice car, man!

Brings back memories of my 3000 GT SL. What a fun car that was.
Let us know when you take it to 125 mph. That's the fastest I ever drove mine. |

wind hits your fairly hard at those speeds |
I think my car without mods can go like 150-160mph.
