Where to stay & what to do in San Fran?
Im headed to San Fran for a long weekend and looking for some cool things to do. More into seeing some things than going to shows and museums. Ill be there from a Thursday night to Sunday.
Friday I have some meetings in the Financial district, so I was trying to stay around the northern end of San Fran, like the financial district, union square, fisherman's wharf, etc. Any suggestions? Since I'm really only going to be able to sight see for a day, anything cool beside the Golden Gate bridge? Ive been there a few times and each time had bad weather, so hoping this time ill get a good view |
Golden Gate Park FTW
I loved living in SF! If I ever move back to the states, I'd live there or Oregon. |
Alcatraz Island
(to tour, not to stay on) |
Tenderloin... don't forget your high powered fire-arm. And a large canister of bear mace.

Book Alcatraz in advance by internet, we couldn't get tickets. They were sold out for a week.

I can suggest a few things. One thing I can tell you right off the bat is to ALWAYS carry cash as a lot of the smaller shops, and bars in SF are cash only!
First there is the Westfield Mall on Market street (cross 5th) which, granted, is just a high-end mall but there are some really cool shops in there. Pier 39 along the Embarcadero is a very popular destination for out-of-towners with a lot of novelty shops. If you really like beer, you should go to the Gordon Biersch brewery as they have a lot of great beers and some pretty good food too (try the pizza). One of my favorite Italian restaurants is actually a chain called Buca Di Beppo’s which I believe is on Mission St. There is also Mel’s diner down the street which is a 50’s style restaurant that has good food for fairly cheap. On Third St. is the SF Museum of Modern Art and is pretty cool for a museum. But the best “museum” is the Exploratorium by Golden Gate Park. If you're in the mood for a movie, I like the theater at The Metreon. That should keep you pretty busy but if you want more suggestions, let me know. |
if you wanna stay in Financial District stay at Le Meridien - http://www.starwoodhotels.com/lemeri...ropertyID=1957

The W is fun too, plus it's close to lots of things...the Sony Metreon, Jillians (sports bar and billiards), MOMA (Museum of Modern Art), the Crazy Horse strip club on Market (or hit Broadway for a slew of titty bars), the Bay Cruise is fun, educational, and highly recommended (located next to Pier 39), MacWorld is taking place at the Moscone Convention Center (right around the corner from the W), but I attended MacWorld today and was disappointed with it, compared to previous years (Apple and Adobe didn't participate, and it was less than half the size of years past). San Francisco is known for great bars and restaurants. To narrow down your choices, I would suggest checking out SF Station and SF Guide; both are both full of ideas for where to eat, and what to do in the City. The weather is pretty nice right now. A few clouds, low 60's in the daytime, but bring a coat for the evenings or if the wind picks up. Enjoy your stay... :) ADG |
