I was thinking about moving out there next summer. I have a trip planned from 1/24 - 2/1 to check it out. Do you like it there?

Well, we moved up here a little over a year ago (believe it or not, we closed escrow on our house on 9/11 :( )....the summers here are fantastic. I'm now about a week into the second real winter of my life and frankly, I could live without it forever. Then again, if you like winter sports then you can't go wrong up here.

There's definitely a small town feel to the area (only about 25k permanent residents), and that's definitely different from the bay area, but it's nice.

Also, unless you're fully self-employed (which fortunately I am), be prepared to make make dogshit wages.

I've live here in Key West, FL for 10 years now. I like the small town feel and I'm used to "dogshit" wages. Working as a captain on the water I thought maybe there could be some jobs in the summer available. Then when winter came along I would love to work on a ski mountain or plow snow or something. The site I'm working on now is doing alright for some extra income too.

First thing I have to do is convince the wife. Anything I should not miss while I'm out there?

Well, there are plenty of marina-type gigs in the summer and plenty of ski/plow gigs in the winter. And the casinos are always hiring.

Seriously, if you can work it, you should check it out in both winter and summer before making a decision....especially since you'd be moving cross-country.
