When you watch someone on TV for years and genuinely enjoy the guy, then it turns out he's a genuinely good guy just living his dream, and then you see this dream taken away from this guy, you feel bad.

Conan will go on to do something else awesome, but I'm pretty bummed about the situation. I've always really liked him, and he got a bum deal with NBC

Conan as a solid demographic and a good fan base. I won't be shocked to see him on Fox or on a cable channel doing a late night show. Imagine if they put him on a midnight on Comedy Central right after The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. That would be a solid 2 hours for that channel every night.

Conan has LOADS of fans. I've considered him the best late night talk host in ages. A solid 10 years now easy, though I have started to enjoy Ferguson a lot too more recently. There is no way Conan just fades into obscurity here. Some network will pic him up. Fuck is it ran right after Colbert and Stewart, that WOULD be a kickass 2 hour block. Wouldn't be surprised to see him pop up on Fox, or anywhere else for that matter.

Looking at it in a wider context. It always amazes me when people who fail at a job get these big payouts. With the Conan situation both sides are guilty of making a mistake

You have to judge everyone in their own time though. The things Conan does just couldn't be done years ago since the censors wouldn't allow it.

Other than maybe Steve Allen, David Letterman set the model for the modern late night talk show. Recurring characters, awkward out of studio bits, etc. Letterman from the 80's was the pioneer of what every modern late night show is now, Conan included.

Don't expect to see Conan on basic cable though. To viewers it might not matter, but in the TV world, moving from host of The Tonight Show to basic cable is embarrassing.

It is because he has a contract. If the agree to give him a five year contract then decide to fire him after 7 months, he should expect them to buy out the contract.

Yeah, I'm sure the millions he's getting is nice, but if you already have more money than you know what to do with, will more really console you when you were just screwed over from your dream?

Funny how people worry about 2 rich guys fighting it out. Facts are simple, Conan lost over 2 million viewers during the time he hosted the tonight's show. I don't see anyone wasting so much ink or keyboard's stroke when a network cancels a show with bad ratings. :2 cents:

let's say you hired an affilate rep, rep A, that brought in x dollars for site B.... so you moved rep A, to another area of your programe, site C, to bring the revenue up as well.

.... and moved a new guy, rep D, to the old postion at site B... so rep A failed in site C and lost money and the new rep D failed at site B

not sure what the op is complaining about, conan hasn't complained 1 iota about his life sucking.

i actually just watched the final episode, and yeah it sucks for him to have his dream gig taken away, but he's being pretty stand up about it. he had a nice 5 min speech towards the end where he acknowledged nbc and the situation, was very professional about it.

i don't agree with the previous post about it being both sides' fault. nbc knew what they were getting, he hosted with them for what a decade? they also knew conan wasn't going to conform to be what leno was. conan took his late show and put it on the tonight show. i think nbc dropped the ball with leno's stupid new show and got scared that leno would leave. conan signed a contract so he should expect to be paid out.

plus its nice he fought for his staff, can't say a lot of guys would do that

I like Conan a lot more than Leno but he could of still been living his dream. NBC wanted to keep Conan on the Tonight Show, just a half hour later. Then my guess is in a few more years when Leno is finally ready to hang it up they would of moved him back to 11:35. Conan passed because he wanted 11:35. If he's just living his dream hosting the Tonight Show, does it really matter if its on at 11:35 or 12:05?

I would love to see Fox pick him up and put him at 10:30 or 11.

Thats incorrect. The problems started with the lead in to the local news. In some markets, local news lost 40-50% of the audience due to Jay Leno's lead in. Once you have lost that amount of your audience to other stations, then numbers continue to slide off. During the November book, stations that were #1 or #2 in their markets, became #3. In the NYC market, the O&O was losing over $450,000 a week in lost ad revenue.

The trends were tracked back to the move of Leno to 10pm. Conan was a innocent victim of piss poor decisions on NBC's part.

It all goes back to television viewing habits. If you lose the viewer for more than 5 days, you have lost that viewer. That has been proven over and over again. Viewers were turned off to Leno at 10pm and it all carried over.

The affiliates were threatening to not show Leno unless something was done before the Feb book/Olympics. NBC had very few options. Conan stood his ground and did not allow NBC to walk all over him.

If you consider 10 million a year being walked on, you can trample me all you want.

he was never given a chance to succeed....and as far as NBC goes.....he was given a "contract".....if NBC chose not to "man up".....then it would be precedent setting to any other new talent going that way.
