Just watching "To Live and Die in LA" (1985) for the third time

It took me exactly three viewings to put this movie to my all time top5 or something.

Not a wasted move, not a wasted dialogue, too real, so old school, great pace, combining the super intense 80's LA scenery with the best legacy of the "film noir" movies.

This is the French Connection of the 80's with young Willem Dafoe putting on his probably first and one of his greatest villain roles, William Petersen in his best days, a Friedkin trademark car chase, great Wang Chung original score.

I just can't find a dull moment in this movie

Friedken is an amazing director. He also directed The Exorcist.

Sebastian Sands 01-14-2010 10:24 AM

the voice in the trailer.. lol.. so 80's that alone makes you want to see it..

Raf1 01-14-2010 10:37 AM

I don't think I've seen it. What are the other movies on your top 5 list?:)

smutnut 01-14-2010 12:05 PM

A little Miami Vice-ish but I used to get off on it. I actually ended up doing a bit of time for doing the same thing - less successfully of course LOL. The book is better in the mode of being more realistic but less exciting. It's written by an ex secret service agent. He has a series of them. I think their was a movie from his first novella starring Dennis Hopper.

One of my favorites that I haven't seen in a long time...it's time for a re-visit...

i agree with you, I love that movie.... realistic no nonsense action, not fancy slick action like most movies nowadays but just down right GRITTY! And the lead character is a real egoistic asshole, not an asshole with a good heart but just an ASSHOLE! That's something you rarely see in movies, I cant even think of another movie who has a lead character like this. 5 out of 5 stars from yours truly.

Looks interesting, I've never watched it... maybe I should.

"You want bread? Fuck a baker." One of my all time favorite movie lines.......
