Sarah Palin signs on as a commentator with Fox News
 

Former Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin has signed to be a contributor on the Fox News Channel, her lawyer has said.

Mrs Palin, who ran for the post of vice-president during the 2008 election on a Republican ticket, stepped down as Alaska governor in July 2009.

Fox News said that while Mrs Palin would not have her own programme, she would appear on the channel regularly as part of a multi-year deal.

Financial details of the deal have not been released.

"I am thrilled to be joining the great talent and management team at Fox News," Mrs Palin said in a statement on the network's website.

"It's wonderful to be part of a place that so values fair and balanced news."

Fox's executive vice-president for programming, Bill Shine, said Mrs Palin had "captivated everyone on both sides of the political spectrum".

"We are excited to add her dynamic voice to the Fox News line-up," he added.

Mrs Palin was catapulted to fame when Republican presidential candidate John McCain surprisingly chose her as his running mate for the 2008 election.

News of her resignation as governor 17 months before her term in office was up had prompted speculation that she was planning to pursue a career in television.

The Washington Post reports that as well as appearing as a commentator on a variety of shows on the channel, she would occasionally host a programme featuring "inspirational tales involving ordinary Americans".

Correspondents say hiring Sarah Palin is likely to further increase the network's ratings with conservative viewers.

A number of Republican commentators already work for the network, among them George W Bush's former aide Karl Rove, former House speaker Newt Gingrich, and John McCain's rival for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, Mike Huckabee.

Until now, Mrs Palin has mainly used her page on the social networking site Facebook to update her more than one million followers.

Regular appearances on a major network could further increase her support among conservatives.

Her appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show in November 2009, during which she said a run for the White House in 2012 was "not on my radar screen right now", boosted the programme's ailing ratings.

It is not the first time Mrs Palin will be signing on with a TV station. In the 1980s she worked part-time as a sports presenter for the KTUU station in Anchorage, Alaska.

Not a big surprise. I'm actually a little surprised that she didn't get her own show with them.

Probably get one at some point, she has a lot of people interested in what she has to say.but they are smart to see if she can handle it

You have a good point. If she does well I bet they give her like a weekly show or maybe a 30 minute daily show. She has a core demographic that loves her so you know Fox will want to cash in on that.

I've always felt that the Fox rating thing is kind of a skewed situation. Yes, they get the highest ratings of any cable news network, but they are the only ones that offer their slant. If you want your news with a liberal slant you have a lot of options so they share all the viewers. However, if you want your news with a conservative slant Fox is the only option.

Yes it is skewed like that, but their ratings are going up while others are going down, there are a lot of people pissed about whats going on in the government right now, Harry Reid himself is having some really bad ratings in the polls

Unfortunatly my cable provider doesn't carry fox news. I've caught a few things Oreilly has done. I agree with some things he says. I don't disagree with every "conservative" viewpoint like some might assume.

OReilly is respectful of Obama, but questions some of the things he does. He is middle of the road which I think is a better view point.
Beck just questions everything, but he does offer a lot of info, dude is a bit of a nut, but if you check his facts, he is factual

I only watch the BBC for news. The American media is becoming a propaganda mill for the extreme right and left. I miss the days when reporters just reported the news without bias. I guess telling people what they want to hear makes them more money.

It's about a balance, If one news organization if leaning left, another has to lean right, when you have a president that limits what we can hear about the right, then thats censorship, if you work in this industry and think out right censorship is ok, you're not very intelligent or just not paying attention

Actually I think that the left news organizations will step up their attacks of her, she's a big target for them, and that will polarize peoples opinions of her giving her more power in the GOP. She's got the church behind her and with Fox giving her a platform, that if done right will boost her in the polls for a run in 2012. I wouldn't be supprised if this was the plan all along when she quit as governor.
Remember that the GOP is not backing anything that Obama is doing, they want polarizing, so does Obama with the way he's doing things, it's going to get very interesting this year with everything thats going on, just like in 94!

Good, I'm glad she went to fox news... she is considered an extreme right conservative, part of the tea party movement - ie: not a republican but running under that ticket.

We WANT her to be part of the 2012 elections, she will help divide the republican and christian votes! She is the key to making sure the republicans lose again....

Just hope the 18-29 year old range gets out and votes this midterm election... if they vote, the republicans could have god standing next to them and they will lose.
