SEO Fad: Dead and Buried.

Quote:

It really got kicked off last November 2008 when the guy who coined the term SEO, Bruce Clay, said that search engine rankings were dead. Shortly after, Google engineer Matt Cutts, said that while they were not dead they are not as important as they were. Matt went on to talk about how people needed to quit focusing so much on SEO and start looking at things like conversion.

Hmm where have we heard that before. Oh, I had written on that very thing only a couple weeks before Matt?s made his comments.

This of course was the last thing that the SEO conferences wanted to hear.

I had written for a while about why we no longer attend SEO conferences and why we do attend performance marketing conferences. But to hear someone like Matt Cutts make the point was the nail in the coffin. I do not have access to Search Engine Strategies numbers but by looking at who was attending, feedback from both operators, and tweets from attendees talking about how dead the conferences were I am guessing 2009 was their worst year ever.

Also its no coincidence that companies like Microsoft, Yahoo, and Google have shifted their ad spend much more to the performance marketing space. They put money where there is value? and the SEO fad has come and gone.

In 2009 you saw a lot of SEO?s switch to being Social Media Experts or Reputation Management experts.

In late 2009 Robert Scoble (who is a complete retard) wrote about why social media is better then SEO. Thousands of SEO?s came out of the woodwork to take the bait. Proving a complete retard like Scoble is smarter then most of the SEO industry. The funniest part is when the SEO?s would refuse to link to Scoble? they just don?t get it?

Obviously though one of the main reasons we saw so many SEO?s out of work in 2009 was due to the recession. In a recession companies can?t justify unquantifiable expenses? so SEO?s were the first to get the axe.

There is probably about 5 SEO?s that I would take advice from. Aaron Wall at the top of the list. You really need to read this post to understand.

so... as google makes it harder and harder to employ agressive tactics.. "seo is dead"

maybe its much like porn where the market is continually changing and the vast majority of people people don't keep up... eventually fail and then prefer to point the finger outward, rather than inward to properly assign blame.

matt cutts has only one mission... to get people to adhere to google rules and create content in the manner which benefits google and helps them serve the best, most relevant results without people focusing on manipulating results. obviously he's not going to imply or suggest that google is easily manipulated.

Someone has to rank at #1. That will always be the case. :)

I've been saying it for years, get out of SEO. There's no money in it.

Shoemoney up to his shenanigans again. If SEO were truly dead he wouldn't be pimping his keyword-related shit. Gotta give it up to Shoe though--dude knows how to linkbait.

Pleasurepays 01-06-2010 04:32 PM

and he also doesn't own shoemoney.com anymore, i believe. he's just an employee for the company that bought it.

if he didn't have that ringtones check, everyone would be doing nothing but make fun of the fact that he's never said anything intelligent about search engines... ever.

it's pretty extreme to say seo is dead.

seo is just evolving and any "expert" who just realized "hey performance traffic must be the new thing" is pretty behind or only makes money slanging seo as a product. when seo was new people jumped on it like it was a savior and for those who didn't understand it - they were taken by the parties interested in making money from it. it's only considered a fad to those who made money from the lack of knowledge. seo is only one factor of a marketing and web strategy campaign.

he has a point though, but did he just realize this? yes, of course social media is important (even though the traffic isn't big it's fairly filtered) and of course performance traffic is key - targeting a consumer demographic and conversion rate optimization is something many of the guys who left seo lacked. they are and still are puzzled when you ask them how does the traffic perform or about CRO

it's a good thing the opportunist are getting out :1orglaugh

:2 cents:

I believe he only sold off Auction Ads (last year).

However, who knows...

as I spend more time on the google boards I start to get a better sense of google's strategies. Many of the underlying suggestion within g's guidelines are a way to place, how can I say this, about average in the search engines.

Follow the guidelines to a T and it will be a sure way for you to NOT to get placed high in the SE's.

I should know because I am about to be awarded a hydro-ponic contributor at the g board. :pimp

That photo no doubt resulted in more money than the check in the photo.

Agreed.

What I love, personally, is that no SEO I have ever talked to gives you the same advice. One will tell you this is golden, the other will tell you that is a way to get G banned. One will say you need all these techniques, sites, IP's and the other will not.

There is little real basic strategy that any seem to conform to.

Imho the *MAIN* reason why seo's get no work is because the seo-market is overcrowded with scammers. And the *real* people unfortunately do nothing in order to stop this situation. (One thing would be to get rid of this "SEO" term..)
