This is for the entire country....

so there were no riots, 10k more police on the streets than 2008/9 and 1000 cars were burnt (I regularly see burnt cars at the side of the road - every country has its problems controlling youth violence...)

In Canada, a country of 30 million, I highly doubt 1,000 cars are burnt in a year.

Maybe it's a European thing, but I cannot fathom 1,000 cars burning in one night, that is just insane.

as I said, youths in many countries have many different ways of blowing off steam - in france, it's burning cars. And they choose the oldest crappest cars to burn fwiw.
The youth here are very pissed off at Sarko/govt because uneployment is still rising amongst the youth and he promised the world etc etc.

France is a VERY different world from Vancouver, and just cos there is some violence, doesn't mean it's bad.

There is little to no rioting in the US because public protesting is technically illegal in the US. You have to get a permit first, and the person applying for the permit has to agree to take responsibility for anything bad that happens. This means that only law abiding protesters are protesting, and they are highly unlikely to riot. Protests without a permit are broken up very quickly, and don't have the chance to reach the rioting stage.

Secondly, it is no secret that riot police in the US will beat the shit out of anyone in sight if it comes to that. European police keep their distance and kind of allow protesters to air their grievances. US police run in and mace, beat and arrest everyone.

France and Vancouver share the entitlement culture and nanny state mentality.

Highlighted again this morning, a local bum sweeps the streets and isn't paid for it, but local people often give him coffee/food because they appreciate the work he does. I bought him a coffee this morning and immediately 4 other bums get up off the street a half block down and come running over with their hands out. "Where's our coffee?"

This is just the begging. This and next year these kind of riots will get increased all around the world. The distance between poor and rich people is too big to keep most of populations quiet getting dumbed by tv or the latest cell phone. We will see much blood on streets...

Iran is having lots of riots lately

Iranian guy I know says the Iranian riots are because people do not want to live under Islamic authoritarian rule anymore. The trouble is, anything seen as anti-Islam ANYTHING is going to be crushed. Morality police will beat your sister if she is showing too much in public!
