Is my Dedicated Server Secure?

I've been spreading out my sites on virtual servers ever since the last dedicated server I had got hacked and used to send about 10 million spam emails and all my sites got wiped.

It was one of those self managed $99/month specials you see from various web hosting providers.

The only thing that they could do was to re-image the server with it's operating system.

Is web server security something that is available only through managed servers? I installed my own software firewall (smoothwall I believe) but apparently it wasn't good enough.

I'm looking to consolidate all of my websites onto one dedicated server and would like to know my options in the under $150/month price range.

Thanks =)

there are plenty of managed server options around $150 a month not many under $150.

There are lots, but why not take a managed one and then pay an "external" guy like 50 bucks for securing/hardening the server upon setup?

server security is not a one time thing.
its an on going task to keep all the software up to date, and firewall, etc.

Yes but most "service providers" can do this continiously for like 50 bucks or so per month. Really worth it imho

You should really talk to jim at www.techiemedia.com he just ran a few specials that would be in your price range. Also there is NO question that their service is exactly what you are looking for as their support is simply the best you can get.:2 cents::2 cents::2 cents:

"* At the expiration of the initial term, and at the expiration of any renewal term, this order will automatically renew for an additional one month term unless either party gives a written termination notice to the other at least 30 days prior to the expiration of the then current term; on the first one year anniversary the monthly fee for the Dedicated Server will increase to $89.95."

Interesting, I've never heard of a host RAISING prices after a year...

I think you could probably get a better spec server for a similar or slightly higher price elsewhere, but it's certainly not going to be managed.

truth ^.

If you want security, go host at swiftwill. It's a huge pain making your scripts work there because everything is fucking disabled and blocked by default, but once it all works its solid heh

Babaganoosh 01-05-2010 09:44 AM

Stick with a cheap self-managed server and hire someone to harden it. I've always used admingeekz.com and have never been hacked despite constant attempts.

Dappz 01-05-2010 10:08 AM

well there are some lots of good dedicated server that having a good security like isprice, mojohost, hostgator etc....
