The new Alice in Chains kicks ass

Been listening to Black Gives Way to Blue for the past couple of weeks and it fucking rocks. :2 cents:

bronco67 12-29-2009 09:43 PM

I heard a song on the radio and I thought "who the fuck is this, trying to be Alice in Chains?"

Then I found out it was Alice in Chains.

fatfoo 12-29-2009 09:49 PM

I have listened to some Alice in Chains music. I like it.

I also listened to Judas Priest, Slayer, Motor Head, Black Sabbath, and other metal bands.

I had the pleasure of seeing them right after Dirt came out in a little place in Seattle called The Crocodile Cafe. Maybe 200 people there. Layne was in the zone that night and sounded amazing and they blew the walls off that place. It was something I will never forget. Since that night I had tickets (or arrangements) to see them about five other times and they always canceled. At the time they sited a million different reason. Of course we later find out it was Layne and his battle with the junk.

To me there are a few bands the define the Northwest Sound and Alice In Chains is one of them. I'll give the new stuff a try, but I'm not sure I am that interested in it without Layne.

kane 12-30-2009 04:11 AM

Probably my favor AIC song.

Naechy 12-30-2009 04:18 AM

kicks ass

nation-x 12-30-2009 05:57 AM

It's different... I think they would have done better to get the singer from Dark New Day...

I feel sorry for cantrell, he made Alice in Chains sound the way they did, wrote all the songs, then comes Layne Staley, i am tired of junkies ruining it for those who fly straight. Even on songs like Check My brain you can hear Cantrell and its like he sounds better than STALEY!!!

Now Cantrell has to pick up the pieces and continue because Staley was a piece of shit junkie. Cantrell was always billed as "co-lead signer" his voice is in every old song and it must have sucked tremendously for him to have to put his band at standstill for so many years because of a dead junkie.

I bet part of him wishes they never hired layne,

Jarmusch 12-30-2009 10:39 AM

Private Hell is awesome.. you can almost hear Layne singing here

WebairGerard 12-30-2009 11:13 AM

love the new Alice in Chains. Cantrell is awesome. :thumbsup

BlackCrayon 12-30-2009 11:35 AM

cantrell is great but if you listen to his solo stuff it just doesn't have the same feel that AIC did. staley may have been a junkie but he did his part to contribute and wrote some of the songs. cantrell did not write them all.

:2 cents: I can't bring myself to listen to it because of this. Who is the new singer?

*nevermind, read further down.

BlackCrayon 12-30-2009 11:55 AM

some songs that staley wrote. his contribution was mostly lyrics but there were a few songs he wrote the music and lyrics for.

wrote the lyrics and music for these 2

and of course man in the box, lyrics by staley

and just a personal favorite not written by staley

I heard The Croc recently re-opened. I always used to check that club when passing through Seattle. I would usually hit Sub Pop Records for a few hours, grab a bite to eat, and then hit a show. Good times!!! :thumbsup

My favorite Alice In Chains show was when they performed at the '93 Lollapalooza:

Quote:

Main Stage: Primus, Alice in Chains, Dinosaur Jr., Fishbone, Arrested Development, Front 242, Babes in Toyland, Tool, Rage Against the Machine

Side Stage: Tool, Sebadoh, Cell, Unrest, Mercury Rev, Mosquito, Free Kitten, Royal Trux, Tsunami, Mutabaruka, Coctails, Scrawl, Luscious Jackson, Genitorturers, Truly, Eggs, Girls Against Boys, Thurston Moore, A Lighter Shade of Brown, Glue, The Karl Hendricks Trio, Hurl, The Goats, The Runties

It has been years since I had been to a show at the Croc, but it did just get remodeled and re-opened. It looks like they are doing shows there on the weekends now. Some of the best bands in the world have played there.

I wonder if Peter Buck still owns it or if he sold it.

Some of the early Lollapalooza's had the best line-ups. The only one I ever got to see was the one co-headlined by Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

Actually like the title song the best on the album:

Yea because Layne would want the rest of the band to have died along with him...sure. It's evident in the music how much they love and respect Layne, especially in this song.

PornMD 12-30-2009 12:57 PM

To add to my last comment, if anything this album KEEPS Layne IN remembrance, so how it's insulting to the memory of Layne to some people is beyond me.
