I have been news free for a week
I feel liberated.
Better moods, too. The world isn't ending after all. |
Then I guess you haven't heard about .......
. |
I usually get little to no news while overseas but it doesn't affect my mood at all, I know what the worlds like and living in it is easy...

I'm cutting off the cable tomorrow as an experiment. Gonna see if we can go the entire year getting our TV online or via OTA HD signal.
|
You should check out some online blogs about the crazy protests in Iran lately. Fucking wild.

I haven't had TV service for over 2 years. I do miss the discovery channels though, but they re-ran the same 5-hour or so program blocks repeatedly for the whole month. So even they got old after a day or two. I don't miss the bombardment of commercials that seem to take up half of the TV air time, especially those ultra-loud commercials that scream at you. |

I have been tvless for a month and a half... very liberating indeed, sometimes I break down and read the local newspaper online. Other than that I don't miss tv or news one bit.
90% of the news are negative anyways. Get away from the news and you start wondering what is this economic crisis they speak of. |
While I agree that a lot of unnecessary fear and bias is created by the media, I wouldn't want to isolate myself completely because I think it is important to know what is going on in the world. Personally, I feel that I understand other people and cultures better because I take the time to read newspapers and watch the news.
You have to choose your sources though. Or balance what you are watching to be able to make up your own mind without being influenced by one sided propaganda. I have a preference for BBC World news, but that is just me;) |
The only reason I keep TV service is I keep thinking it is only say $50 per month. But when I figure what I am paying for the few shows I watch/month. Anyhow, that $600/year would buy what 20-30 bluray dvds.
It just feels strange to cancell tv. But the fact is that it has to go as it is no longer worth $50/month with a video monster called the internet available for less and already includes someof the shows I want. Not all but the main ones. TV service providers have a new problem: You Tube. Fact is you can see every music video, standup comedian, and virtually every major video ever made (orig on real tv) now on youtube. Just dl and convert to .avi. bing bang boom. I am amazed how youtube has exploded last year or so. Young folks know this. They don't even watch TV anymore with their idiotic, overbearing commercials every ten mins. Right now I have more stuff recorded to watch as well that I never get too. Information overload! And cheap now days too. It's a brave new world and cancelling tv is the next big step. |
And congratz for losing the news media bs.
I stopped watching the news a couple years ago. If I hear something here I might tune in. But to be the puppet who sits there (esp in front of local big city news) and hears about the same tragic stories again and again. Where I am I can cry a thousand tears or not watch it and noone will know or care. I put that junk out of my mind long ago. When I do hear commercials now days, (I video tape or dvd record everything, never listen live) it is so annoying. Anyhow Dav8 and Jarmusch, thanks. I am one of those guys getting up the courage to cancell sattelite tv. I lose my equip. But it is now becoming obsolete. :) |

Now see I love tv but I just feel with the internet now having so much good stuff at youtube where will I find time (and I dont) to watch tv service tv that is overpriced and void of much good content. Youtube is not void of good content. Content trumps resolution (HD.. tv service provider's last card.. it's an ace but youtube holds the joker, and yes we are playing 500. :) That is why tv services will soon be out of biz i'm afraid. |

17 posts left to hit 1k ... yikes |
Ok they won't be out of biz anytime soon. That was a bit melodramatic :)
But I get the feeling I am not alone in feeling why give those 30 bluray dvds I could have this year to the tv company. For example I like some standup. In a couple hours I had all of Artie Lange's stuff and something you will never find on tv service tv.. all of Richard Belzors old standup bits back to the 70's. There ya go. Cost me zilch. All legal. It's off YouTube for pete's sake. The new super mega power on the block. Most people can afford $50 and that is the only thing keeping tv service alive next few years. OK I'll get off my soap box now. :) |
Fuck the news, I never ever watch it.
