Laser vision correction
 

I've recently been getting very annoyed at my vision, it's not bad enough that i can't drive, but it definately gets in my way for normal daily activities (identifying people by faces when they are standing 20+ feet away, reeding some signs, etc).

Working in this field, our vision is very important to all of us, so this is a double edged sword. It's likely that the surgery will improve my vision, but there's a chance it will go wrong and lead to worse vision, or blindness.

I'm just wondering what others in the same field thought about it. Too much of a risk to mess with it, or the benefits outweigh the (small) risk?

A friend of mine just got it done and had excellent results the next day. I am still holding off because my luck would put me in the percentile of unlucky fuckers that would end up legally blind...

If you can't read a sign from 20 feet away, you shouldn't be driving!

At the very least, get glasses to wear while driving...

I had laser correction done over 3 years ago and my vision is great, still 20/20. If you decide to do it make sure you research your doctor really well, that is the most important part. The procedure is really quick and recovery time is minimal. I had to signup a shitload of papers though before the procedure more than back surgery. I think it is really safe, more than driving down the road in your car.

Did you have RK or LASIK?

I have heard some BAD ASS stories about Lazer vision, there are 100's or 1000's of cases where people are blind or ther vision is just fucked with ghosting and other shit. I heard a rumor that they did this lazer vision on Apes 20 years ago and now they are color blind. Who knows if thats true or not but it should give you pause and do a bunch of research into it before you get it done.

Believe me if its so minor you can still drive then just get some contacts, it takes me a total of about 1.5 mins to put my contacts in including quick rub to clean them and bang your done. And it takes about 30 seconds to remove them and put them into your carry case.

Stick to contacts until your really need to do the lazer thing. Your eyes will get worse if your using computers all day long its just life.

I know the chances of any problems occuring are slight but I really would rather wear glasses and contacts than have dry eyes and other possible complications for the rest of my life, you only get one set of eyes.

Plus the long term effects of the surgery are not really known.

I've had Lasik done two years ago, and agree with BluMedia. It's been awesome for me.

I had Lasik done with the 4th generation laser about 7 mos. ago and I could not be more pleased. My vision was 20/60 (-8.5) and my corrected night vision was getting bad. Now I see 20/20 day and night. No "halos" or anything else....


There are risks associated with anything and the risk of a debilitating eye infection is greater with a daily routine of sticking your fingers in your eyes to insert/remove contacts.


Ask for referrals from folks you know who have had it done and talk with the doctor.

Tiger Woods had it done 3 years ago...and no one had more $$$ riding on his vision than he.

Well today the risk is about 2% but it's getting better every day. Usually the doctor can determine if you are in the risk zone before the surgery. Also, you should wait until your eyesight has stopped changing and that is usually at the age of 22-23.

i had lasik done about 8 months ago and have 20/10 vision :)
i paid alittle extra for the lifetime service warranty, i felt it was worth it since no one knows how your vision could be in over 40 years,

everything has risks and the risk is well worth it,
aslong you goto a good doctor that proberly screens
you'll should be fine

Forget it.....my friend had it done two years ago, at first it was fine, but complications soon set in and he ended up 100% blind!
To make matters worse, the laser did some cell damage which became cancerous....they ended up cutting a golf ball size tumour from his head:(

I had Lasik and so glad I did. I had to sign about 6 pages of intense papers even to the point wear I had to write out I may need to wear glasses after this surgery. Pretty crazy, did you guys go through that?

Unfortunately laser eye surgery is like playing russian roulette with your eyes in my opinion. You're going to hear all the good stories on here, becuase the bad stories probably can't see well enough to use a computer.

No way in hell will I take that risk. Sure if you come out as one of the good stories, you're going to think you did the right thing and did your due diligence etc etc, but the unfortunate truth is you got VERY lucky with a loaded gun pointed to your head that didn't happen to go off on you, but does on countless others.

I had -2.5 in one eye and -2.0 in the other eye ( near sighted )

i used to wear glasses for a few years when i was a child, but my vision corrected itself. i don't wear glasses now and i passed an eye exam for my license about a year and a half ago but i think my vision isn't what it used to be. one of my eyes seems to be going downhill and i was thinking about getting laser eye surgery done.

didn't know a certain % can have serious problems. guess i shouldn't even think about it until they improve the technology and my vision gets worse in that eye.

I notice a trend here. Those that are happy with it, had it done. those that have had a bad experience are not posting........ Oh Never mind they are probably legally blind! :D

So where's the braille version of GFY at? :)

Back to the thread ... My friend and a former employer, JohnIP also got it done two years ago and is very happy with it. I'm considering it as well.

Glad to see people I actually know who have had it and recommending it. That means a ton more to me (sorry Sword) then the web pages of bad things alleged by strangers. I'm even more pro-laser after reading this thread.

If you do happen fry your eyes,this guy can technically replace them with electric ones. Technically.
