Food stylist explains how the viewer is fooled by the burger commercials

Everybody already knew this but it's much more elaborate then I could imagine. It's good to know that most food advertising is based on misdirection and deception.

Sarah_Jayne 12-07-2009 08:09 AM

I am pretty sure that is a clip form a show that was on HBO when I was a kid and it has ALWAYS stayed with me. It also showed how milkshakes are glue. That is one of the shows that has had the biggest 'mental sticky' impacts on me.

dyna mo 12-07-2009 08:17 AM

this just in:

chicks wear make-up to look more beautiful.

i couldn't pick one youtube video out of the 1000s that reveal this deception.

L-Pink 12-07-2009 08:22 AM

Well worth watching ...

.

We had a chick come in to our home ec class in 7th grade that did this. She was "the" chick, did all the McDonalds commercials and what not, worked with Jordan (since he was big at the time and in all the McDonalds commercials).

It was pretty cool.

They're actually legally obligated to use real food for everything except ice cream commercials. Because the ice cream would melt in seconds under all the lights.

KILL_FRENZY 12-07-2009 09:15 AM

People always try to make anything look better...Well they can fool the eye but nor the taste-buds. If the actual food was bad the restaurants would go out of business. I concur this deception and will go for a burger later today :1orglaugh

I thought these methods were outlawed since this was created?

Also, does anyone else wonder why a perfectly intelligent adult keeps referring to a patty of beef as "he" instead of "it"? So weird when people do this!

rowan 12-07-2009 09:28 AM

The trouble with these ads is that when you get the actual burger it's a huge letdown. I occasionally order Mcdonalds when I'm desperate (only place open 24/7 nearby) and it pretty much always comes with the burger compressed, the bun slightly folded over, and visible traces of grease sitting in the box. Sometimes a lot of it. Yeecchhhh.... :Oh crap

I don't think it's outlawed.

Iron Fist 12-08-2009 09:59 AM

Don't tell anyone, but everything on TV is fake.

Sarah_Jayne 12-08-2009 10:00 AM

Seriously though, that clip has to be close to 20 years old. Wonder how much is just digital touch up now.

Here's the clip from Falling Down with Michael Douglas - where he expresses disappointment with his Whammy Burger... I agree!

The relevant part starts around 3:50 in this clip

You wouldn't hit it?

ShellyCrash 12-08-2009 11:51 AM

I'm more surprised it's a real burger.

I next to never eat fast food, but when I do it's usually french fries from Mc D's. Evil tastes good.

After Shock Media 12-08-2009 08:34 PM

Anyone really give thought on how to shoot an ice cream commercial in full sun under extra lights, with several takes no breaks allowed. So they use shortening or other heat stable material, just like they do no cook many of the foods shown in the commercials. It looks better just seared and then painted with some oil brushed on.

Been done since day 1, just like makeup on people on TV.

Killswitch - BANNED FOR LIFE 12-09-2009 12:58 PM

I could give a fuck less how my burger "looks", as long as it tastes good.

Have you ever seen what your burger "looks" like after you chewed it up?
