Boston restaurant recommendations?
 

Going to boston for 4-5 days. Anyone wanna give me some restaurant recommendations? Doesn't matter if its a fancy steakhouse or hole in the wall as long as its good :thumbsup

If you want fancy, go to Da Vinci's on columbus ave - fantastic Italian
Less formal, go with Franklin's Cafe - rgular american stuff, but great
For breakfast, it's got to be Charlie's Sandwich Shop

I love anything in the South End - it's the heart and soul of Boston imo.

Well, if you haven't been to Cheers... I know it's cheesy and somewhat overpriced, but it's still Cheers, right next to the park.
Others favorites whaen in Boston are "Barking Crab" and "Sonsie's". I don't have addresses on theis computer, but Google them by all means and give them a try, they're well worth it.

I was only in Boston a few hours on layover and Cheers was the one place I had to go eat at. It's just a cool atmosphere and worth finding your way there.

legal sea foods is good , locke-ober is the creme de la crop!!! also most of the hotel restaurants at the westin are also very good.

Seafood is king there, so you can't go wrong at McCormick and Schmick's, adjacent to Faneuil Hall. :)

Cheers isn't even a "real" restaurant - they sacrificed the restaurant that the TV show was loosely based on in order to create a tourist trap for people who said "OOOH! I want to eat at Cheers!" Skip it.

Legal Sea Foods was great in the 70s (is there anyone here who's really from Boston, and remembers going to the original Legal's in Inman Square - having Bloody Mary's while you waited for your table? Yummm :) ) and even the 80s before it became overpriced and not worth it - UNLESS you're going there for the fish chowder which has always been, and always will be, spectacular and one of my favorite foods of any kind.

I loved the No Name (seriously, there's no name on the restaurant, that's why it's called the No Name) for years - very informal and great fish; I haven't been there in a while though, and hear that it's gone downhill somewhat. For fish, I'm more a fan of Skipjack's and Atlantic Fish, both in the Back Bay....and if you want an old school feel, the Union Oyster House (near Fanueil Hall/Quincy Market) combines old Boston and really good food.

And Borked is right about the South End - best "collection" of restaurants in the city. To me, the best one to give you a feel of what it's all about is Hamersley's Bistro.

Damn, now I'm homesick, and won't be going back until Spring :(

PS ADG - Bostonians *hate* it when people call Boston "beantown" :winkwink:

Realized I left out a very important category: Italian.
You can't go horribly wrong by walking through the North End (Boston's Italian neighborhood) and picking out a restaurant at random - but Giocamo's and Panza are definitely worth checking out. (If you have a time machine, go back to the 70s or 80s and go to Francesca's, or to the European for pizza :winkwink:).
No matter where you eat in the North End, though, stop at Mike's Pastry for cannoli afterward (and Modern Pastry, down the street, is almost as good). :thumbsup
