Are these prices real? (Detroit, Single Family Homes)

http://www.realtor.com/realestateand...na/pg-11?sby=1

Are these real?

I understand that there will be taxes, agent fees and shit, but what's up with all of the $10k homes?

I just don't get it. I can sell my crappy flat where the parents live, leave them my house and buy 10 homes in Detroit. Wtf.

Even if the total cost will be upwards to $20k, it's a steal. Are you Americans in Detroit really so fucked?

Twig 11-20-2009 09:17 AM

Nobody TRIES to move to Detroit. If God hates you, you're born there.

I grew up in Soviet Russia.

the borded up shacks look about right, you paying for the lot in those cases minus the cost it will take you to demolish the house and get it hauled off which might cost more than you paying for it. In 99% of the cases on those "10K" homes they are beyond repair. On the ones that look like they are in good shape it is likely there are liens on the property that you will have to pay as well. I can't believe that someone is going to sell you a house in decent condition in a decent neighborhood for 10K with no other costs involved. People still have to live somewhere and you can rent a house like that for at least $350 a month so you would have you money back in 3 years. If that was the case they would have be grabbed up before the ad even went live.

Something is wrong with it, if it is too good to be true 99% of the time it is not what it seems.

MaDalton 11-20-2009 09:33 AM

$10K?? look for the homes that cost $100 or $150.... ;))

unfortunately they mostly come with a little "fire damage" lol

czarina 11-20-2009 09:38 AM

who wants to live in Detroit?

What lions? Do you mean people renting the house?

I understand that most houses will be in deep shit, but as long as the walls stand, I'd easily fix it. I built my current house pretty much from scratch on my own.

Location, location, location.

Welcome to real estate.

nation-x 11-20-2009 10:05 AM

For those who haven't ever been to detroit... there are huge sections of the metro area that are wastelands.... seriously.

beerptrol 11-20-2009 10:15 AM

yep, go visit the locations of these houses. There was an article on how families who wanted to buy and move into Detroit were S.O.L cause banks, and outside investors bought all the prime real estate at a steal.

POed-poster 11-20-2009 10:17 AM

I use to live there, over 15 years ago and even then, it looked like a war zone. I had a job that required I canvass the entire city on foot (I ran a sales crew for the News/Free Press) and there are some sections where there is literally one house per block and 100 burned out shacks where hookers do their clients for crack money. I remember once being approached by a girl, high on something, who couldn't have been older than a 12, who said she would let me fuck her in the ass for 10 bucks in one of the vacant houses. I DID EVEN STOP TO SAY NO. She looked like she had lived a 100 years in that frail body full of needle holes. I have no doubt that she died a long time ago.

Today, Detroit is worse than ever. It looks worse than a bombed out village in any third world war zone. There is a reason they are selling houses for 10K. In fact, there were homes that you could have gotten for MUCH LESS. I am talking a few thousand. And that was 15 years ago during the bubble years. Detroit is the epitome of an urban wasteland.

Am looking at sat pictures of the homes (Bing's bird eye view rocks) and honestly can't see anything _that_ bad. Obviously it's not the same as actually being there, but the districts look a lot better than what I'm used to.

Tom_PM 11-20-2009 10:32 AM

If you move there, move to a northern suburb of detroit or something. Or move to ontario, canada instead.

L-Pink 11-20-2009 10:40 AM

Look at homes that are a little more expensive they are also very cheap right now. A number of factors hit Detroit ... unemployment, housing in general, etc. The biggest factor I believe is population exodus. Everyone wants out and no-one sees a reason to move in.

Supply and demand to an extreme. With each new family moving to another area one more house with no potential buyer drags the rest lower.

Makes sense. But still, it can't possibly be worse than Soviet Russia. All I really need is just a place in the US. Since my business is EU-based, life in the US will be a lot cheaper.

Mutt 11-20-2009 11:11 AM

those areas of Detroit have looked like a post apocalyptic urban wasteland for at least 20 years. my dad and I somehow got lost on a trip to Michigan 20 years ago and ended up in one of those neighborhoods, it was bizarre, streets empty, bars on every window, then some gunshots rang out from somewhere - i've seen ghettos before but there was life going on in them, people living in the apartments, people going in and out of stores - this wasn't like that, it was a wasteland

Eminem chooses to live right across the street from West Detroit along 8 mile, or so I'm told. Why, god only knows.

d-null 11-20-2009 11:51 AM

I am guessing you'd need to be pretty streetwise to even survive living in an area like that :2 cents:

you can find dirt cheap houses in some areas in California too even, maybe not 10k but well under 100k, but who wants to live in an area where you need to sleep with a gun under your pillow and be watching over your shoulder every time you go outside?

shuki 11-20-2009 12:15 PM

It is nicknamed the Rustbelt for a reason

The Heron 11-20-2009 12:25 PM

Detroits a pretty shit place. I live 4 hours north of detroit on the big lake and it's not bad but really only the west side of michigan is worth living in imo.

This is one of the better homes anyone can wish for in a post soviet country.

Fuck 10k for a 3 bedroom home. Shit what do you get for 100k, a castle complete with staff of 8???

2012 11-20-2009 12:52 PM

crockett 11-20-2009 01:12 PM

10k is a bit much TBH, you can get them for a buck... However I dunno why anyone would ever want to live there.. Likely the worst city is the US.

Ok, so Atlanta also has some cheap housing.

Definitely better than Detroit.

Can anyone recommend anything else?

i thought they were shrinking Detroit rapidly

It's not the fault of African-Americans, they did not choose to come here, it's the fault of the slave traders and their heirs. They are the one that should straighten up this mess.

alias 11-20-2009 03:33 PM

Damn, had no idea Detroit was that rough.

AmeliaG 11-20-2009 06:25 PM

Someone just picked up an 80,000 seat arena stadium with a zillion parking spaces in Detroit for half a mill, less than a sucky condo in Los Angeles.

LoveSandra 11-20-2009 09:11 PM
