I don't normally tout my SEO skills on forums but as a one off special I am willing to guarantee the #1 spot in google for the term:

"Hardcore Chocolate Monkey Buttons"

The assumption "if he knows SEO, why the hell would he charge other people and not work on his own websites" is stupid.

I ran an SEO / New Media agency for 2 years. We did our own projects, but most of the revenue came from clients which we did SEO for.

If you know how to build a palace, it doesn't mean you'll live in one. What we did was specialize in actual SEO - and didn't like to get involved in other aspects of running an online business.

You might think that we could easily build hundreds of landing pages, put up our affiliate links there and be filthy rich.

Yes, that is true -- but instead we opted for building long term relationships with respectable brands, and offered more services on top of SEO -- and they kept on coming back.

And we got a lot of clients on forums.

In regards to "pay me $20 and I'll tell you how to become a millionaire" - I made my first REAL money after buying an ebook like that in the early days. And I still buy these types of ebooks on a regular basis - and exchange copies with other webmasters. Any method can work if you apply it properly. Some I use, some not. Some work, some don't.

I started out by learning from others, then after I got the "jist" of it.. I figured out how to find new techniques on my own.

A lot of it is pretty elementary in my humble opinion, but it takes a lot of work as well.

Then there's some things that people do which are "secret"(or so they/we like to think) and it gives us an edge.. again, or so we like to think. If you're good at it, it works. If you're not, it doesn't. Pretty simple.

Link building, decent keyword(s) placement on your pages, good linkbacks, no linkback from spam sites.. that's the elementary stuff.

But you can get top 10 for longtail keywords with only 1 or 2 link-ins.. just depends how you do things. :2 cents:

agreed.. i was sandboxed and one of the guys tried telling me i have bad seo. what it really is, noone is visiting my site with the keywords that have me ranked first. will have to find something different to use.

99% of seo consultants are scammers, but there are actually some legit reasons why they would choose to do consulting instead of running their own thing...

seo isn't some magic, you don't pull rankings out of your ass, it's a business like any other... you have to invest significant amounts of time and money to get rankings... with investment there is always risk... with consulting you make easy risk-free $$$, while the site owner takes on all the risk...
