Question for VBulletin Users: Are you seeing strange posts?

I am seeing the strangest things lately.

We run a couple of forums using VBulletin, and are using Captcha to keep out the spammers.

Every once in a while though, new accounts get through and post very strange messages which seems to contain valid text but is in fact completely irrelevant to the topic of the thread. I can't put my finger on it but it "feels" like a generated post. Sometimes their sigs have links to pill sites or some other such thing, and sometimes not. Has anyone else noticed this kind of thing or am I just going crazy?

I get that too, and I'm thinking that what you are seeing is a result of xrumer

I'm thinking xrumer as well... I have a mainstream forum that has a couple of these posts but its phpbb... Only thing I can think of is that it's manually done... reason being xrumer cant get past the setup I have to block spam.

Have you plugged a sentence or two into Google? It's probably content scraped from elsewhere...

Or if it's not, you can at least see if it's being spammed out to multiple boards.

Your clue probably lies in their sig. 2c

Have you tried ReCaptcha? I used that multiple times and it always stopped 100% of the auto generated / outsourced spam.

I've seen those irrelevant posts too by the way, not sure what's up with that.

I would suggest you to do a search on either the name or the e-mail address of the account posting irrelevant posts. Usually, you'll be come up with loads of other message boards and one or two spam report sites reporting that account or e-mail address or anything similar.
